Of Challenges and Birthdays

There have been a few of things I had planned to do. But they had been pushed to the back burner because of various reasons/excuses.

Now, I just happen to be lucky to be part of a wonderful group on FB called the IndiBlogeshwaris, hosted by Vinita. I say ‘lucky’ because they are an amazing bunch of women bloggers, who haven’t yet kicked me out, because I hardly contribute anything. It takes me time to get comfortable in large groups, and here, I am happy being in the sidelines enjoying the fun and the banter. Having said that, even being in the sidelines of a group like this, is a wonderful experience, so much to learn from, so much to take away. Just like this challenge that they came up with on the 1st Anniversary of the group, to pick up one task that we take up, and resolve to complete it in time for the first birthday of the group.

As I said, I had a few things that I needed to do. The most important for me at the moment being the need up the practical test to get my manual driving license. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ve been putting it away. I would have put it away for a bit longer, citing the need to settle down first etc, etc, etc before taking it up, especially given the buses seem to work for me fine, at the moment. Thanks to this challenge, I set about it immediately. Got myself an instructor(I can’t drive the car we have now, because of some insurance issues with the lease, until I get my license), and started my lessons.

I wish I could declare that I was successful, but I haven’t. I wished I could get a test date soon enough, but clearly luck was not with me. It is rather far away. So while I haven’t successfully completed the challenge, it certainly helped me focus and go for it. And I think it gave me the drive to give it my all. And for that, I am grateful to the IndiBlogeshwaris! Here’s wishing a wonderful group of women, a wonderful 1st Birthday and many, many more to come!

The Day I danced to Chammak Challo.

There- that was something I never thought I would say 🙂 Especially since the only reason I even knew of the song was because Brat would go on about on Facebook. There is a first time for everything, they say, and I have come to realize that ‘they’ are right 🙂

So how did it come about, you ask? Well, remember my non-existent exercise routine? The one that used to involve the coat rack, in it’s previous avatar as the cross trainer? After the non-use of the cross trainer, I convinced husband that I needed to get the Wii Fit. Saritha had asked me what the Wii Fit was. It is supposed to be a video fitness routine, in which you can do a variety of exercises. Real good – if you used it. I used to use it regularly for a while, then as usual, the novelty wore off, and I got lazy. Right now, it just graces our living room. On the rare occasion that I do switch it on, it shames me by reminding me that ‘It has been 376 days since our last work out’! As if I needed to know that! But it is cute, once it asked me how husband was doing, I selected ‘Fatter than before’ and it says,’ Oh! Lets keep that between us, shall we?’ 🙂

The only thing I do regularly was walk. I try to walk regularly – unless the weather was extremely bad. Last February, a friend of mine told me about a Zumba session near by. It was on a Saturday. I went for one class, loved it! Loved the way, muscles I did not know existed, complained about the unexpected activity. But! There is always a ‘but’, in my exercise history, I have come to realize. The ‘but’ this time was daughter’s swimming lessons. The only slot available was on Saturday mornings. Now, swimming is far more essential than Zumba, so that was the end of it. Some of my friends still went – on and off. But that was the end of it for me.

This last December, one of the mums I met at Daughter’s Bharatanatyam class mentioned that there was a Zumba class at a place quite close to where I live. December felt like the wrong time to start something like this. I knew that that the two week break would throw away whatever good that one class would have done.

Finally schools reopened, and I got my freedom back. Along with a friend, I decided that I had to get back in shape. All the food that had been ingested, would take more than a few walks to walk off. Zumba was the only option.

And today, we danced to Chammak Challo in the class 🙂 Thanks to my FB education, I was able to identify at least one song in the whole routine 🙂 That convinces me, FB is not all bad 🙂

What type of wife are you?

Screamed a friend’s FB post this morning.

The question scared me, to be honest. She, of course, is a ‘Super Wife’. Knowing her, I don’t doubt it, for a minute. Knowing myself, I would not even try it. Why would I ask FB to certify me as a really lazy wife more addicted to her blog and books than looking after every single need of her husband?

But seriously, these quizzes, who thinks them up? I am tempted to try them out, just to find out the kind of questions they ask, but dread doing it – I would hate for all my FB friends to get notifications of how I found this ‘wonderful’ quiz/application. So good wife or not, you can see, that I am a very cautious FBer. These days, I log into FB just to play Scrabble, thanks to Nu( Nu, You got me re-addicted to Scrabble!, I am just thankful, it is not Farmville).

So, as I was saying, do you take this quizzes? Are they fun? As someone who steers clear of all these ‘quizzes’ and questions that analyze various aspects of our personality, I find it quite odd that so many of my friends do seem to take part in them. Is it just something to do when we have nothing to do? I don’t think anybody would take these quizzes seriously, do you?

The last couple of days, have been so very boring, stuck at home, thanks to bad weather! I almost got tempted to start playing Farmville again or take one of those inane quizzes to relieve the boredom. If only I could though! In addition to everything else that happens when it snows, like making stepping out impossible, driving dangerous, we also lost our TV and broadband signals! For a while we felt all cut-off – like living in an island – all alone! OK, I exaggerate, but it was disconcerting. Can you imagine how it is? One moment, you are surfing channels trying to see which other part of the country had worse weather than us, and the next thing you see is a blue screen stating that the satelite signal is unavailable! Does that even happen any more?I mean, years ago, when we only had DD, I remember how a storm could change the direction of the antenna – but these days? Apparently it does happen.

Thankfully, we still had signal on our phones and internet working on them – how could we survive otherwise?

I had a post half-written on snow, with pics and all, but with this latest onslaught of heavy snow showers, I have decided to show my protest by not taking any more snow pics, until better weather comes our way. Just to let you know, we have over a foot of snow outside, schools canceled( let me not even go into details of how tough it is to entertain someone who wants to be in school) and all of us are busy sneeezing or coughing(making snowmen/snow balls out of the question). I mean, if we had to have bad weather, why can’t we have it when we are all healthy and fit?

And yes, wading in snow, is not a pleasant experience, playing those quizzes on FB, suddenly sounds so inviting!
