Day 9 – Feels like Brexit all over again

It does. It really does. We went to bed confident that Britain would vote ‘Stay’ only to wake up to a ‘Leave’ vote.

It was shocking to say the least. What was worse was when facts came tumbling out about how some of claims that the Leave campaign made were farcical to say the least. Things had been over-hyped and a gullible public bought into it.

A lot like what’s happened in America today. Or at least that’s what it feels like to me from the outside. Last evening we were discussing this at work and a few of my colleagues did predict that this is the way things would turn out. We were all hoping it wouldn’t, but it did.

What really worries me is the number of people who have voted for Trump. The mind boggles to think that anybody could think that Trump is an alternative at all, forget about ‘President’. There is something crying out to be addressed if so many people feel Trump is the right person to lead them. And from what I’ve read it’s not just about Hillary Clinton being disliked (although I can’t understand that either). I’ve read people talking about how Obama messed up America. Really? Not living there, I know, I really wouldn’t know. However it is very difficult to believe. I can’t help thinking that a lot of this is down to what people are told. The rhetoric.

And the one saying it in the most convincing manner wins. The one telling people that ‘others’ or ‘outsiders’ are responsible for their troubles win. It’s come down to that hasn’t it? Playing on people’s insecurities to win.

Now the only hope is that the Presidency is not dictated completely by the person who is president. Hopefully he will have competent advisors advising him. Hopefully all the talk of walls and bans were all just pure rhetoric. Just to win the election. Hopefully.Lets wait and watch.

  1. I know! Yes, looks like it’s going to be Trump all the way. Such a shocker right! Quite obviously America seems to have decided what it wants, let’s hope the decision doesn’t mar the rest of the world.

    • I don’t think it will impact the rest of the world too much. America might see an impact based on what his policies turn out to be. Also I do think a lot of the noise and the bravado was for grabbing the headlines. Was for getting there. Once president, I think he will turn down a notch. I just can’t imagine how people can vote for him. That is still mind boggling for me ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I think we forget that people know the best , so much of america is living in poverty, the world does not know that, Same as in BREXIt cameron and labour were too confident they did nothing or far less than what the opposing party did..

I dont blame the americans choosing Trump he said the right words what would be worth seeing is him doing what he has said now that will be a challenge for sure but knowing the way Trump did business he just might do it … ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Sure, I do get your point, but I still can’t understand how people can vote for someone like Trump. As for his businesses, from what I gather, he hasn’t been the most ethical of businessmen either. Given that I’m just amazed he reached this position. But that’s democracy, isn’t it? You get your Obamas and you get your Trumps, based on who captures the nation’s imagination. I’m just glad I don’t live in America.

  3. It’s was really shocking to see that Hillary lost the elections. Media were totally against trump. But people voted for him. Entire America voted for him, so there should be something in trump which got the confidence of entire America. And media had projected trump very badly and media didn’t influence the voting..

    • He spoke to the right audience: the middle and lesser middle classes. In numbers, they obviously are way more than the elitist groups. Sigh.
Sadly, America’s middle class lack not just money, but brains as well.

  4. It was too shocking!
Were they such male chauvinists that they couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a woman…I wondered!
Anyway, lets see how things go…

  5. One can only hope sense has kicked in, now that the position is his! At least, in his speech, he did say the right things. One can only hope!

Whether the rest of the world like it or not, America voted for change. It’s a bit line how the AAP won!

  6. Hi, you are right, shocked is the word for what has happened in America… I truly agree and hope along with you when you say ” Hopefully all the talk of walls and bans were all just pure rhetoric. Just to win the election. Hopefully” – absolutely.
    take care
