Relocating..

.. is fraught with all sorts of unexpected trouble and is becoming a complete roller-coaster of emotions for me.

Heartbreak
– Finding hardly worn skinny jeans in your wardrobe, that you had kept away, in the vain hope that one day, you would fit into them. And now coming to the realization that its not going to happen in a hurry, not with the amount I’ve been eating 😦 Those skinny jeans will have to find another home.

– Finally giving away gorgeous hardly worn clothes of daughter – because she grows out of them so quickly!

– Throwing away winter coats that stood you through 8 cold winters, I don’t know why, but it makes me cry. Who would have thought that I could get all sentimental over clothing!

Physical Labour
– It is no less that hard physical labour to haul bags after bags to the charity shop. There is no decent place to park close by, which means I have a long trek with bin bags full of clothes to be given away.

Discovery

– When you find buried in the storage cupboards things you had completely forgotten about. A cake decorating set, for instance. And it makes you want to bake and decorate right away:)

Frustration
– Toys packed away for giving away to charity, toys which have been ignored for years, all of a sudden, become, ‘My favourite ones!’. And I, of course, am the evil one giving away all her things!

– When daughter finds it very funny to pop the bubbles on the bubble wrap that the packing company brought for me to pack. We have taken a complete pack and move package, but for some reason I thought that it would be good if I could do some of it myself. So I got them to drop off some packing supplies. I now realize that I had not thought things through. Someone is now spending her term break bursting bubbles on the bubble wrap!!!! I can only hope that they bring more supplies when they come around to pack.

Seriously, how do people manage when they have to ship everything across. I am not taking any furniture, and it is still driving me crazy. Moving houses in the same city or even in the same country was much easier. Atleast I did not have to make decisions on throwing away stuff, which I think I find the most tough.

While I might be oscillating between what to take, and what to leave behind, one thing I have certainly decided is that Daughter goes to school until the very last day. Having her underfoot while trying to wrap up things will certainly drive me mad 🙂

  1. Ah! Packing/ moving is always painful. I can so relate to your agony when youa re havign difficulty in giving away clothes & toys. Somehow to me it always feels I am giving away a part of me. Not that I have been using the stuff but still….

Loads of luck, you really need it 🙂

  2. I hear you! Loud and clear. I’ve been there and done all of that. Even thinking of it brings back the exhaustion we experienced.
And oh, at least you can console yourself saying your daughter is responsible for all the flat and almost useless bubble wrapping sheets you paid a fortune for. In my case, I would ignore the work and spend hours just bursting those bubbles on those wraps, chiding myself for it, but being unable to stop. I love doing that. It’s liberating 😀

  3. Abhaa tell me about it, we moved from the US to Chennai. The packing was all done by the movers, the last thing I needed was to buy material and pack with a hyperactive 17mo. I thought I would die but somehow survived, the cargo has already come and we have unpacked also! And just like you even I had mixed emotions- like I HATE snow but I was SO sad to give away my coat. All the while I was like “aioo I am never going to see snow ever again wahh :(”
    Good luck with the move.

  4. oh.. packing and unpacking is always difficult task.. that too with kids around.. i know how u feel giving away the stuff.. i also have few books which i like, but dont use and not ready to give..
dont worry, when the deadline nears u will will be done with packing and choose what is needed and what to discard.
initially when u start packing, u will go through old things and memories associated with it, later u wont have time for it when ppl( hubby) troubles u by asking about status of packing.

  5. hugs Smitha.. take it easy.. bursting bubbles in bubble wrap – what fun? I love that too 😀 😀
throwing way stuff – its hard very hard for me too..

  6. Moving home and packing that too across countries is indeed a very tiring and emotionally draining task. Hope the move goes smooth 🙂
    Good luck with everything

  7. Hugs! You are doing great… once you have everything in your new home, the excitement of unpacking and settling down will take some part of the heartbreak away.
If it makes you feel better – keep one jacket/sweater atleast with you which you used during heavy winter. My mom did this and she cherished that sweater for a very long time and the memories never failed to make her smile 🙂

  8. All the best for shifting… 🙂
For bursting bubbles, I think I better don’t say anything coz even I’ am guilty of doing that…. It is somehow so irresistible…. 😀

  9. Tight hugs Smits! I can imagine the emotional roller-coaster you must be going through.

As for bursting bubble wraps..I am with kunju :D! I love bursting them too!

Oh yes, lets not get started on the toys put aside for charity! Here, till the time I have picked the neglected toys to keep aside, madam doesnt even realize she has had them all this while…but the minute I have put them in a bag, it dawns on her that she HAS to have them! And if I refuse..well, then I am taken on a massive guilt-trip which may last for days!

  10. I so understand… Relocating is always fraught with a myriad of emotions. Good luck with it all! 🙂

PS: Bursting bubble wrap is so very addictive. I do it all the time, whenever I can get my hands on a piece. 😀

  11. I’m sure it will pass soon, agonizing though it is now! Once you are settled down, you may find that a bit boring!! Enjoy the madness and chaos!! I love bursting bubble wrap too:)
