Memories.. Old and New..

Some thirty years ago, one of the things I remember clearly are the annual circus visits. I think it was during the winters, when the little town I grew up in had visiting circus companies set up camp at a certain ground, and all of us would wait for a chance to go there.

I think we did it regularly, until it stopped somewhere down the line. I actually don’t even remember when. What I do remember is the excitement, the awe that we watched the performers with, the animals( I do realize that it was so cruel, but for a young child, it was still something out of the world). The clowns and their antics – it Β even made grown-ups laugh!

Last year, we were in Blackpool, and were thoroughly disappointed with the place, when we got to know that there was a circus there. We went to watch it, and really enjoyed it. It was not the same as the ones back home. It was inside a building, and too posh? Maybe? Something was just not the same. The magic that I remembered from my childhood was missing. Β Of course, it can’t be the same can, it? I am a grown-up, now! Silly me!

A couple of weeks ago, husband came across a circus being held here, near us. He booked tickets, because we thought it would be fun – much better than just eating out – which is what we would have done otherwise. Yesterday was the day. We(husband and I) did not have very high expectations, but daughter was super excited! All she wanted to see was the clown!

The very first sight of the circus made me strangely happy, and nostalgic! It was just the way I remembered it from my childhood. The pitched tent, and colourful decor. This was no posh circus, it felt real! It felt like those circuses that I had watched as a child! It was a Russian circus, and the performances did not disappoint either!

Two hours just flew by! We laughed at the clowns antics, wowed the acrobats, and the other performances. It was just perfect! The only disappointment, according to daughter, was the the popcorn was sweet 😦 Daughter and I like the salty popcorn, while husband loves sweet(he loves sweet in everything), and they only had sweet popcorn.

It was such a fun outing. Hopefully daughter will have wonderful memories of circuses – just like I have. I managed to take a picture of the circus tent, just as we were about to drive off, after the show. Does it bring back memories for you guys?

To make the weekend even more fun, we went to an Asian fair, this morning, at a park nearby. Had loads of chaat. For a change, the chaat here was delicious. Or was I delirious with hunger? Probably a combination of both. Husband and daughter feasted on jalebis. Daughter got into loads of kiddie rides, and we did a family ride which went on and on until we were ready to beg them to stop. Even the rains held off until we were ready to go home.

And a weekend, where we did not eat out. Not counting the chaats! I had food prepared, and ready at home, but we can’t resist eating when there is delicious fair food available!

Perfect weekend, by our standards πŸ™‚ How was yours?

Double century! Wow! But against Hriday? How could you do that, Hitchy? Poor little darling! His own father scoring a double century against him πŸ™‚ But then, any day soon, I am sure he will get his revenge πŸ™‚

lol… circus I do remember having seen as a kid and yea animals shouldnt be there but as kids they were the biggest draw card… the tigers and teh elephants playing cricket with footballs… !!!!

It was magical wasn’t it? Tigers. elephants, lions! Do you remember that serial on Doordarshan – Circus?

  2. thats cool Smitha πŸ™‚ Surely its an excitement when I went to circus but the circus here in Chennai lost its sheen 😦 and I am not ready to watch the animals performing… feeling thats bad…

Weekend is not that great… nothing special too… but on Friday I had great time seeing my college friends together… πŸ™‚ Drenched completely in rain while returning home πŸ™‚ Felt great πŸ™‚

  3. I will sound like a idiot now.. This made me nostalgic and cry. So I went away and came back to comment.
Circus made me rwmember chandigarh apollo circus.. My nanu(grand dad) would come to the city for his political stuff BUT a BIG BUT he would take me to the circus. And buy me that softy.. Ice cream in cone.. Before we went in.. And in the interval it waa time for a bhutta (corn)….
When the circus finished it was time to go on the big wheel for a ridw…

A bless you smitha.. Reminding me all this… The moment I started reading the article alll these memories and stuff came rushing back. Wow

    Lovely article… Thank you .. Sorry I sound like a wimp…

    • Awww! Hugs Bikram! I know how you feel! I have special memories of circuses too πŸ™‚ Guess we are all part of a similar generation πŸ™‚ Before TV ruled lives πŸ™‚

Softy ice-cream! and Bhutta! your circus was tastier than mine πŸ™‚ Hugs!

  4. AWESOME week end….sahi babes….I have fond memories of the circus as well…dad taking bro and me and we enjoying…yep that time I wasnt really aware of cruelty to animals and all 😦

These days, thankfully animals performing is banned in almost every country, so it is just the performers. Even that was spell-binding. Can’t imagine the amount of practice they must do to perform so flawlessly!

but you sure had a super weekend!

    We sure did πŸ™‚

  5. weekend was perfect!
went shopping for madam swaram’s gift (you know how she insists on a gift right?!:P) 😈

πŸ™‚ Swaram needs to see this πŸ™‚ How much trouble you went through πŸ™‚
So, tired out from all that shopping!! πŸ˜‰

I feel like shopping when I read this 😦 Maybe sometime this week.
And today, it was brunch! πŸ™‚ I totally love going for sunday brunches!! πŸ˜€

We used to do a lot of Sunday brunches before Poohi was born and when she was smaller. We haven’t done a brunch outside for a while now. Maybe we should do it next weekend πŸ™‚

I always wanted to go to a circus…

    πŸ™‚ They are fun!

  6. When u say circus the thing that comes to my mind is the smelly smelly smell!!! Few months back even we had a circus round the corner but we didn’t go. But yes your post triggered so many memories!!!

  7. Hmm…circuses…I remember loving them for a year or two but then started to think and worry about the torture the animals go through and it kinda lost its charm for me. Sounds like you had a good weekend! Mine was pretty good…worked on Saturday (half-day), got my brand new kitten, and spent the rest of the weekend enjoying her antics! πŸ™‚

  8. I remember once when I was kinda 6-7 years old, I watched my first Circus show. I had enjoyed it so much though I really cannot remember the acts now. But sadly haven’t watched any after that… But Like you said, I should let my daughter too have a feel of the unadulterated entertainment:)

  9. Lovely weekend. As a child, I remember feeling the thrill as soon as I would see the circus tents being put up too.

They don’t have them anymore. Rather, they do, but they don’t have the animals anymore. A part of me is sad, but a bigger part of me is happy. The animals are meant to be in the wild. Not balancing on stools and fetching balls. It’s just too unnatural. πŸ™‚

  10. I somehow was robbed of circus memories, I remember every time i see an AD in the city, the elaborate planning that used to go on in mind to visit it, and finally giving up on it due to lack of people to take me to it.

  11. We hv been wanting to go to a circus here for so long and it is somehw nt happening at all πŸ™‚
I saw N tagging u on FB when both of u were at the circus, and it so increased by urge to go to one πŸ˜›
Cirucs, fair and chats – what more cud one ask for πŸ™‚

Ours ws very dull – I had loads of work and Su ws sick too 😦

  12. no doubt Smithu circus holds a special place in the map of memory land in I think everyone’s lives-belonging to our time and age πŸ™‚

I agree πŸ™‚ Most of us grew up in the same era – with the same kind of entertainment.

this reminds me it’s been ages that we’ve been to a circus 😐 I hope the next it is being held here I’ll take Chirpy too πŸ™‚ wah even the thought of it is so exciting πŸ™‚

It is, isn’t it? We had a ball! It was just perfect πŸ™‚

I’m so glad you could find one in this time and age…specially happy for Poohi to watch and enjoy one πŸ™‚

Me too! I was so glad that she was able to experience it too!

  13. Circus always brings back memories of ‘My. Galilano’s circus’. I used to be so taken up with the stories tht I wanted to go live in one πŸ˜€

Oh yes! How could I forget about that? They made it sound so so exotic and fun!

Last & the coming wkend both same-same….term exams going on u see 😦

Term exams! I have a few years to go before I reach those πŸ™‚

  14. This reminded me of first and the only time I went to circus with my dad…. My dad does not likes circus much, may be coz he gets to see enough of it at our own place,,,, πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ I will never forget that day… It was so much fun…. πŸ™‚

  15. Circus.. you’d be surprised but as a child that is one place i hated to go. i just felt the animal whipping, the clowns etc. were all too ‘whatever!’ I didnt have a phobia, but I did not enjoy the circus…reading your experience, may be i should take V to circus, may be she will have more pleasant memories than me
