Do you..

forget that you bought something and remember just before it is about to near it’s expiry? No? Well, I wish I could say the same. It happens to me all the time 😦

Yesterday, I ‘discovered’ a packet of ready-to-roll puff pastry that I bought last week, after getting impressed by the custard tarts that my friend dished out. They were absolutely delicious. She, of course, made even the pastry from scratch. I decided to go the easy way – I picked up a packet of ready to roll puff pastry and then forgot all about it. Until yesterday. Thank god for that, because it was one day away from expiry.

The custard tarts were out of question – too much work and only the egg yolks were needed to be used in the recipe, which meant that I would have to use the whites in some other recipes – as I said, too much work. So I decided to go the easy way.

1. Home-made bite-sized pizzas – made by daughter.

And this is how they turned out πŸ™‚

2. Chocolate croissants or chocolate parcels whatever you want to call it – just because we felt like it πŸ™‚

3. Vegetable puffs- just to bring back memories of all those bakeries in Bangalore πŸ™‚ Although I have to say, they tasted nothing like I would have liked them to 😦

And after all that buttery, flaky pastry, I need to go on drastic diet!

  2. Why do you always make me feel like as if am the only weird one here? πŸ™„ I can remember by heart the expiry date of everything in my home…from the cans in the pantry to the liquids in the bathrooms to the soft love filled glow in the husbands eye πŸ˜₯

Then you are the only sane one around πŸ™‚ I am totally crazy when it comes to things like this 😦

Hey I have a jhakaas veg and chicken puff pastry recipe which I swear by. Let me mail it to you πŸ™‚

Please do! That would be a life saver for situations like this πŸ™‚

You made so many things on teh same day with a roll of dough? 😐

Yes – and we ate it all up as well- so you can imagine the amount of butter, and white flour we ingested 😦 But it was a smallish roll of dough – I bought the smallest size possible πŸ™‚

Ps: I noticed that well manicured hand in the first pic πŸ˜›

LOL! That was Poohi, making her own pizza πŸ™‚

  6. I think the ready-to-eats are really a blessing outside India.. we won’t buy them here usually..

But generally I buy only chips or biscuits which will be gone in a day so the expiry date is not a problem πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I too have been reminded by mom several times about some fancypants item i have bought for a recipe, and forgot about it till almost expiry! and mom will dish out her usual, “why do you buy it if you didn’t want to make it?!!”

  9. Tell me something. If a particular food item is 1 day away from expiry, do you think overnight something mysterious will happen to it that hasnt happened over the last 2 years, which will suddenly mean that the item is not eatable as soon as the expiry date arrives?

I have often wondered. In my opinion, if something approaches expiry date, we should not eat it from atleast 1 month before the date. And if you can eat it one day before the date, then you can eat it one day after as well! πŸ˜‰

I am sure we can eat it one day after the expiry and still survive πŸ™‚ But this particular thing has only a 7 day life, so I did not want to take any chances :
