On a sad and wet day..

.. what do I do?

I make murukkus! And thankfully this time they look like murukkus. Last time they looked like rice powder dissolved in oil πŸ™‚ It all started a few months ago when Poohi wanted to eat them. My normal course of action would have been to pick up a pack at the local Indian store, but clearly providence had other plans. They did not have it in stock. Daughter very nicely asked me, ‘Can’t it be made at home’, and I thought, ‘Why not!’.

Very soon I was changing my mind. The murukkus I made ended up disintegrating in the oil. And I was told very nicely by daughter, to leave murukku making to Ammamma and the people in the shops πŸ™‚

Today, I thought I should give it another try. AndΒ hurrah! Not perfect, not great, but definitely not too bad ones πŸ™‚ And it was all worth it to see Daughter’s excitement when she got back from school. It took me back to the days when we used to get back from school and Amma used to have all sorts of snacks ready for us. The smell of the batter reminded me of all those days, many, many years ago.. Although I don’t think I ever got to eat murukkus without eating some nutritious food first. Today, in my excitement, I let Poohi enjoy πŸ™‚

And before you ask for the pics – I still have a laptop situation that makes it impossible(almost) to download pics. Will upload them and torture you all once I get my new laptop πŸ™‚

  1. murukku!!!!! πŸ˜€

even when my mon tried it disintegrated in oil. but it still tasted good πŸ˜€

It was inedible 😦 The oil was full of the powder – and totally inedible 😦 This time though it came out better πŸ™‚

mom used to make kozhikattae or maggi for after school! sigh!!!!

Kozhikattae – Mom taught me how to make it this time πŸ™‚ Am yet to experiment with it though πŸ™‚ We used to have dosas, noodles, and all sorts of stuff, now that I think about it πŸ™‚

poohi must have been thrilled! πŸ˜€

She was πŸ™‚ After last time’s disaster, she was pleasantly surprised πŸ™‚

as soon as u post pics, kumbakarna (crafty )and bakasura (swaroo) will be packing bags to arrive at ur doorstep!!

    *chorus laugh* – UUUHAHAHAHAH!!

Come come! I am tired of asking you workaholics to take a break and come here on a holiday πŸ™‚

    hugssssssssss!

Hugsssss! You know, Poohi took her precious ballerina to school to show it off to all her friends. She has told everybody that Crafty aunty made it for her πŸ™‚

  2. i like murkkus … obviously i lack the skill (and the recipe!) to make them… so usually i try to buy it on the way back home from Sri Krishna Sweets … as per the record, if u reach the shop even one minute after 5, u are sure to be told the murkkus are all sold out..and so i’ve learnt its just wiser to go to the shop on the weekend!

  3. How nice… we call it Chakli.. and its restricted to store baught ones!!! I looooove them. Have no clue how to make them.

Check out the recipes online, am sure you can find something you like. I hate deep frying so I never attempt anything which involves deep frying, but this time was an exception πŸ™‚

But you have inspired me.. I think i will give that cake baking with kiddo a final go tonight. Instead of just pushing it out from one weekend to the next…

Do give baking a try – that is a lot of fun with kids πŸ™‚ Get little cup cake cases and make cupcakes – they love it!

  4. Smithu I can never ever bring myself to try making muruku. The very thought of piping out something in perfect circles into a cauldron of hot oil rings danger alarm in my brain. 😐

Saksh – Did you even imagine that I piped out perfect circles into a cauldron of hot oil! I thought you knew me! I make some sort of rounds on baking paper, and the gently transferred into the oil πŸ™‚

But you know what? I have a very generous Tamilian neighbour who makes sure that my pantry is stocked with all kinds of snacks and chutney podis

You lucky girl! Can you ask her if she happens to have a cousin/sister/relation near here πŸ™‚

When in the world are you going to get that Laptop delivery? Am dying to see Pohhi in her uniform 😦

I can’t tell you how much I have cursed husband for this laptop issue! And now he found a cheaper deal and is wondering if he should cancel this and order again! Don’t be surprised if you hear of someone being murdered very soon πŸ™‚

  5. Great Smithu..that it turned well enuf to make Poohi happy…thats what matters… πŸ™‚

    I know – I am so glad πŸ™‚

Sometimes when I cook, I feel that the dish has not come out well…or the taste shld be diff….but the girls gorging on it, giving me hands up sign, makes me feel better and happy. πŸ™‚

I can so imagine that – nothing beats that, does it πŸ™‚

So, keep trying every week…in little quantities…you’ll be perfect murukku maker soon. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    Hopefully – fingers crossed πŸ™‚

  6. Murukku – The name is enough make me hungry Smitha πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I just love it.. its the favorite snack of mine and I don’t mind having them in 10s or 20s.. If it is bought from stores then I finish the whole pakcet..

I can’t eat them like that anymore 😦 I love murukkus too πŸ™‚

and in home.. mom makes it during diwali and makes a lot.. it will be delicious.. she will be storing it in drums and there is no worry for abundunt snack for 10 days.. u should come to my home by diwali and have it.. it will be absolutely wonderful πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

In drums! I ure have to come to your place for Diwali πŸ™‚ What fun!

and why its a sad day??? πŸ™„ πŸ™„

If it is a rainy day – it hsa to be a sad day 😦

  7. Murukkus have been and shall remain my culinary Waterloo, I think. Aw, heck! Who am I kidding one of my several culinary disasters :D. My mom used to make murukkus and Achappams (those floral looking thingys, sweeter than murukkus) in vast quantities just before school closed for hols, to feed the ravenous hordes (our friends and us) who would rampage thorough our house :). Great that you go it right, Smitha!

    • I have plenty of culinary disasters too πŸ™‚ But this time thankfully was a success πŸ™‚ Achappams! I love them – not even my mom was successful at it, so I would not even try πŸ™‚ My mom used to make so many things at home when we were younger – I don’t remember buying any snacks from outside – these days, I don’t even think twice before buying them 😦

  8. Murukkuuuussssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!

Undakanni packs her bags, catches the next flight to smithu’s place and lands up at her doorstep puffing n panting, dragging her suitcase behind her…
Can I get one too??? Or two? Or three? Or more!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Sure πŸ™‚ As many as you like πŸ™‚ Poohi tries to take 4 at a time – because she is 4 years old πŸ™‚ Not that she gets away with it, but she still tries πŸ™‚

True…good old days…when mom makes snacks when you come home from school πŸ™‚ sighhhhhhhhh

I know! I feel like such a bad mother at times 😦

  9. Wow, Smits!! I love murukkus! Its a shame that I don’t know how to make it though :(. Oh yes ammamma used to make all those snacks for us that we used to love to munch on..so nostalgic!

I loved making them, Deeps πŸ™‚ And yes, that feeling of nostalgia, was definitely there πŸ™‚ I was so happy I could make it for her πŸ™‚
