.. what do I do?
I make murukkus! And thankfully this time they look like murukkus. Last time they looked like rice powder dissolved in oil π It all started a few months ago when Poohi wanted to eat them. My normal course of action would have been to pick up a pack at the local Indian store, but clearly providence had other plans. They did not have it in stock. Daughter very nicely asked me, ‘Can’t it be made at home’, and I thought, ‘Why not!’.
Very soon I was changing my mind. The murukkus I made ended up disintegrating in the oil. And I was told very nicely by daughter, to leave murukku making to Ammamma and the people in the shops π
Today, I thought I should give it another try. AndΒ hurrah! Not perfect, not great, but definitely not too bad ones π And it was all worth it to see Daughter’s excitement when she got back from school. It took me back to the days when we used to get back from school and Amma used to have all sorts of snacks ready for us. The smell of the batter reminded me of all those days, many, many years ago.. Although I don’t think I ever got to eat murukkus without eating some nutritious food first. Today, in my excitement, I let Poohi enjoy π
And before you ask for the pics – I still have a laptop situation that makes it impossible(almost) to download pics. Will upload them and torture you all once I get my new laptop π
murukku!!!!! π
even when my mon tried it disintegrated in oil. but it still tasted good π
It was inedible π¦ The oil was full of the powder – and totally inedible π¦ This time though it came out better π
mom used to make kozhikattae or maggi for after school! sigh!!!!
Kozhikattae – Mom taught me how to make it this time π Am yet to experiment with it though π We used to have dosas, noodles, and all sorts of stuff, now that I think about it π
poohi must have been thrilled! π
She was π After last time’s disaster, she was pleasantly surprised π
as soon as u post pics, kumbakarna (crafty )and bakasura (swaroo) will be packing bags to arrive at ur doorstep!!
*chorus laugh* – UUUHAHAHAHAH!!
Come come! I am tired of asking you workaholics to take a break and come here on a holiday π
hugssssssssss!
Hugsssss! You know, Poohi took her precious ballerina to school to show it off to all her friends. She has told everybody that Crafty aunty made it for her π
Awwww she said Crafty AUNTY haan? cutie pie π Btw Crafty she calls me Sakshi sirf SAKSHI
Err Poohi respects only ppl who deserve it π π
π‘ πΏ See she calls me SEXY and that is respect of the highest order
Saksh, you forgot she calls you ‘sexy’ aunty π
Yessu sissu. Am ready with my bags packed already π
Yes packed bags – please get here quickly!
Congrats on getting the murukku’s right. Your daughter must have been thrilled π
Yes, she was π And so am I π
Cool, that must feel good to make a daughter’s day with murukku π
Oh yes π Esp after the disaster the last time round!
i like murkkus … obviously i lack the skill (and the recipe!) to make them… so usually i try to buy it on the way back home from Sri Krishna Sweets … as per the record, if u reach the shop even one minute after 5, u are sure to be told the murkkus are all sold out..and so i’ve learnt its just wiser to go to the shop on the weekend!
I can send you the recipe. As for skill – if I could manage it, am sure you could too π
Wow!! A sad and wet day turned into a happy and all smiles day!! Cool!! π
Yes it did π Thank god for that π
How nice… we call it Chakli.. and its restricted to store baught ones!!! I looooove them. Have no clue how to make them.
Check out the recipes online, am sure you can find something you like. I hate deep frying so I never attempt anything which involves deep frying, but this time was an exception π
But you have inspired me.. I think i will give that cake baking with kiddo a final go tonight. Instead of just pushing it out from one weekend to the next…
Do give baking a try – that is a lot of fun with kids π Get little cup cake cases and make cupcakes – they love it!
Excellente!!!!! Well done, Smitha!!! Now u can treat me to some π
Yeah and in return you can feed her your Kaju Katli…sobs!! None of the Bloggers live near my place to exchange food π₯ On second thoughts OG does but the thought of his Rajamma is not that appetizing πΏ
Ahem someone told us something when we asked them kajukatlis π
Go give ur lazy *** some work Pal π π
Yes sure π I promise to make some when you come here – with the Kaju Katlis π
Smithu I can never ever bring myself to try making muruku. The very thought of piping out something in perfect circles into a cauldron of hot oil rings danger alarm in my brain. π
Saksh – Did you even imagine that I piped out perfect circles into a cauldron of hot oil! I thought you knew me! I make some sort of rounds on baking paper, and the gently transferred into the oil π
But you know what? I have a very generous Tamilian neighbour who makes sure that my pantry is stocked with all kinds of snacks and chutney podis
You lucky girl! Can you ask her if she happens to have a cousin/sister/relation near here π
When in the world are you going to get that Laptop delivery? Am dying to see Pohhi in her uniform π¦
I can’t tell you how much I have cursed husband for this laptop issue! And now he found a cheaper deal and is wondering if he should cancel this and order again! Don’t be surprised if you hear of someone being murdered very soon π
Wonder who named it ‘murukku’ !! Murukku actually means ‘To screw’ in malayalam, na? π π π
What am I supposed to say to this π
How did my comment appear as a reply to Sakshis ???? Smithaaa…this was and is my original comment; Im expecting a reply too π π π
How did my comment appear as a reply to Sakshis ???? – Because you replied to her π
Well that’s coz you expected me to take this issue further πΏ But am a decent girl and my theories for the origin of that name will now go to the grave with me
Me toooooooo!
But i hv the same prob with mine too now π¦
Cnt share any of those pics I took during Ganesh Visarjan π¦
Same pinch, Swaroo π
oh wow!! i have never managed the guts to make murukkus.. too complicated according to me..post the pics soon..
It worked! I can only be grateful that it worked this time round π
Great Smithu..that it turned well enuf to make Poohi happy…thats what matters… π
I know – I am so glad π
Sometimes when I cook, I feel that the dish has not come out well…or the taste shld be diff….but the girls gorging on it, giving me hands up sign, makes me feel better and happy. π
I can so imagine that – nothing beats that, does it π
So, keep trying every week…in little quantities…you’ll be perfect murukku maker soon. π π
Hopefully – fingers crossed π
Awesome Smithu! Am waitinggggg for the pics π and some parcel too if possible lol π
Sigh! U make me wanna prepare them today π Best for the rains π
Pics will come soon π Parcel – I don’t want you to curse me π
Well done Smi! You do so much girl…. look at me regular food cooking bhi ho jaye toh thats more than enough! π
Arre, I am the same. Yesterday I had leftovers so did no cooking π I find regular cooking – oh so boring.
Murukku – The name is enough make me hungry Smitha π π I just love it.. its the favorite snack of mine and I don’t mind having them in 10s or 20s.. If it is bought from stores then I finish the whole pakcet..
I can’t eat them like that anymore π¦ I love murukkus too π
and in home.. mom makes it during diwali and makes a lot.. it will be delicious.. she will be storing it in drums and there is no worry for abundunt snack for 10 days.. u should come to my home by diwali and have it.. it will be absolutely wonderful π π
In drums! I ure have to come to your place for Diwali π What fun!
and why its a sad day??? π π
If it is a rainy day – it hsa to be a sad day π¦
oh I can imagine Poohi’s delight. What better than Mom-made murukkus on a wet day!
π I made some more yesterday and she had the time of her life π And I loved watching her delight π
Murukkus have been and shall remain my culinary Waterloo, I think. Aw, heck! Who am I kidding one of my several culinary disasters :D. My mom used to make murukkus and Achappams (those floral looking thingys, sweeter than murukkus) in vast quantities just before school closed for hols, to feed the ravenous hordes (our friends and us) who would rampage thorough our house :). Great that you go it right, Smitha!
I have plenty of culinary disasters too π But this time thankfully was a success π Achappams! I love them – not even my mom was successful at it, so I would not even try π My mom used to make so many things at home when we were younger – I don’t remember buying any snacks from outside – these days, I don’t even think twice before buying them π¦
don’t worry practice will make u perfect!
π Practice will also make me fat, Reema π
Murukkuuuussssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!
Undakanni packs her bags, catches the next flight to smithu’s place and lands up at her doorstep puffing n panting, dragging her suitcase behind her…
Can I get one too??? Or two? Or three? Or more!!! π π π
Sure π As many as you like π Poohi tries to take 4 at a time – because she is 4 years old π Not that she gets away with it, but she still tries π
True…good old days…when mom makes snacks when you come home from school π sighhhhhhhhh
I know! I feel like such a bad mother at times π¦
Wow, Smits!! I love murukkus! Its a shame that I don’t know how to make it though :(. Oh yes ammamma used to make all those snacks for us that we used to love to munch on..so nostalgic!
I loved making them, Deeps π And yes, that feeling of nostalgia, was definitely there π I was so happy I could make it for her π
Mouth watering…feel like eating it smitha…
Come over, Aryan’s mom π
