So how do you write?

Do you start a post and finish off at one shot?

Do you write save drafts and then work on it to make it better?

Do you research when you write?

I fall into the first category. I just write, finish and post. I finish most of my post at a go. If I ever do stop, I am more than likely to delete it off. Yes, I hate drafts. It just clutters up things for me. Β I rarely do any research, which I wish I could change. I wish I could write those detailed and informational and analytical posts that some write. I am more of an on-the-spur blogger. I write when I feel like, and when I have the time. The only time that had me worried was when I started the NaBloPoMo. I was worried if I would be able to write everyday.

Luckily for me, I find that I do have things to write most days. Β The only problem I have faced is getting the time to sit down and write. Normal days, I would write when I have the time, and have replied to most comments. The main difference that I see now, is that I make myself sit down and write everyday. So I do have a lot of replies pending, which I hate by the way. And I also get queries about why I am not blog hopping πŸ™‚

So tell me, how do you write? Does anything in particular inspire you? Is there a time of the day that works for you?

And one another totally tangential note, did I tell you that we have become a football crazy household? Husband is a non-sports person, he watches nothing. Every since the world cup started, he has been making an effort to follow the sport. Apparently that is all that gets discussed at work these days πŸ™‚ So every evening, he is in front of the telly, and so am I. Yesterday, I sat and watched the England vs Slovenia match, all by myself much to daughters dismay. I actually scared her once with my cheering πŸ™‚ We are now keeping our Sunday free, two very interesting matches scheduled! So how is the football mania where you are?

PS : I promise I will get to all the un-replied to comments and your blog posts. Between the FIFA and the NaBloPoMo, I am a little stretched πŸ˜‰

  1. Ahh I try to finish a post in one go…especially those that are just waiting to be written down and exploding in my head.

Yes, I know what you mean.

Sometimes it takes me some time and effort to actually sit and write a post…when the words son’t come so easily..

For me, I don’t write unless the words are flowing πŸ™‚ I can’t get words to flow otherwise 😦

I definitely do a bit of research…and try to add funny pictures and quotes wherever possible…
I have seen that – and I wish I could do that too – but guess I am lazy 😦

  2. oh it depends some of the posts I want to reaserch, find links, videos to embed those are the posts that usually take me ages to write… I started writing them and save and keep working on them for long long long time and then some of them get published eventually but most of them dont see the day of light 😦

πŸ™‚ I used to do that too.. Now I have understood that I will just waste my time, so I delete it off quickly πŸ™‚

most of the times the post that I write fall in the first category… i start and then i finish and publish and done

and usually I either blog in the mornings when ojas is still sleeping or when in the afternoon when is taking a nap or in the evening when he is gone to the park or in the night when he has gone back to sleep, ok ok u get it I blog when ojas lets me πŸ˜‰

LOL! That is true about most of us mums, I guess πŸ™‚

  3. and NabloPoMo thing is good for that only it takes us in a schedule and disciple which is good and bad too at times… i mean someday we are just posting for the heck or it, isnt it? but then i guess its fine

Yes, ‘someday we are just posting for the heck or it, isnt it?’ – that’s exactly how I feel a lot of days πŸ™‚ But yes, it was a good experiment, but one that I would probably not repeat πŸ™‚

  4. The blog is mostly write, finish and post. But some posts take a little longer.

Writing my story on the other hand – seems it is an effort to make myself write.

πŸ™‚ Yes, some posts do make us struggle a bit, don’t they? Welcome here.

  5. At one go always πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
…. if ever I write drafts, they die a drafts life πŸ˜› clutter my drives and I delete them when it shows red πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Ya research in terms of searching for pictures… I do that once the post is done and ready to publish :):)

Same here. My drafts die as drafts too πŸ™‚

But I do write down notes while away from the lap, some fleeting thoughts, rarely do I look into them later, but if I happen to, posts do shape up, offshoots mostly and never match the notes :):)

I don’t even do that! God, I am so disorganized!

PS: sh..sh..shsh.. I’ve never written a draft/s for any of my assignments even, direct final and submit!!

Oh you are so like me!!! I never revise at exams. Finish and hand in my paper -just happy that it is done with πŸ˜‰

  6. God Smiths! We r alike in soo many matters! For me too, its just write when I feel like and post immediately πŸ™‚
I never had drafts before .. its only now that I have a few for this NaBloPoMo πŸ˜› πŸ˜›
It just clutters up things for me – I feel the same too πŸ˜‰

I have no drafts even now 😦 The only time I use drafts is when I need to sync up my book review posts on Bookrack. Otherwise I am rubbish at planning posts in advance.

Even if I do some research for a post, I do it when I am in the mood to post it and finish it off and publish the post immediately πŸ™‚

Yeah, I am pretty much like that – though my research is very minimal, if at all..

    • We both r crazy abt tennis and football. Cricket craze – no more for me but the husband still watches πŸ™‚

All I have to do is convert husband into a cricket fan – he deprived me of 10 years of cricket watching:(

I am extremely busy nw b/w FIFA, Wimbledon, NaBloPoMo .. God! I can do with some more extra hrs everyday πŸ˜‰

I have not watched Wimbledon at all this time… FIFA itself is time consuming enough for me πŸ™‚ Extra hours – me too!

  7. I do write at one go….the only exception being the tags…Oh, they take up more time. As I have done so many tags so far…I feel the need to put things across in a more better way – so, I need time and thats the only time, I put it in drafts.

Yeah – that makes sense. Actually tags can be done from the drafts as well – I should do that the next time πŸ™‚

Otherwise, I get the idea sometime during cooking or when I meet ppl, then form the whole thing in my mind and just write it at one go….JUST LIKE YOU !!!! :

    Oh yes! Same pinch πŸ™‚

    • One crazy man is enuf for the cricket and football from my home… πŸ˜‰

LOL! I can imagine that! We have both gone crazy here – can you imagine Poohi’s plight πŸ™‚ Thankfully she is in bed by the time it starts – most of the days πŸ™‚

  8. are you not sad that Italy is out of the WC? Im feeling very sorry for them 😦

Right now I am just happy that England scraped through. Italy has not been playing very well, has it?

    • Doli my daughter was almost in tears when she saw them cry on the TV yesterday!! 😦

@Smitha – She also started watching only because she wants to know what everybody else at work (her internship) is taking about!!! But I always watch World Cup and love it too, so I was glad to see her join in our cheering πŸ˜†

  9. I won’t store anything in drafts but at times I won’t write a post in one go… I will take my time… a maximum of 2 days atmost… πŸ™‚ I just wish I take some more time to add some humor in my posts which will make my posts a little lively πŸ™‚

Your posts are lovely, Kanagu. I have no patience either. It is now or never for me.

Surely you have enough things to write and already its day 24 πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ I am also thinking of taking NaBlaPoMo just to increase my posting frequency.. its dreadful for the past 5 to 6 months πŸ™‚

I am never going to take it again – it is a bit much for me. I don’t get to reply to comments as much as I want to.. Over all, I think I prefer to post at my convenience rather than as a fixed schedule, you know.
And for football… I am all for Argentina… they will rock with little more care in defence πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ For England… best wishes.. they are up against Germany and if they pass there, we, Argentines are waiting 😈

All the best πŸ™‚ Am sure Argentina is waiting – if England reaches there πŸ™‚

    • I am also keeping the Sunday free… How can I miss 2 going to be great matches πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ I wish England – Germany match to be classic… only other match in Round 16 which is going to be big is Spain Vs Whoever-qualifies-from-Group G… its going to be interesting πŸ™‚

You too πŸ™‚ Yes, it will be fun! Yesterday everybody was hoping that Ghana comes wins, in which case England would have played Ghana instead of Germany, but no such luck πŸ™‚ It will be fun on Sunday πŸ™‚

  10. I usually write at one go, though some posts are more difficult to write. I rarely do any research, I leave that to more serious writers. I write when the mood strikes me and mostly do it when the kids are not at home. And there is not a single draft saved, I write and post immediately.

Your posts are such delights to read πŸ™‚ I love the way you write, Aparna.

My husband is not into sports at all. It is me who is addicted to the World Cup. I love sports,be it cricket, football or tennis.

I am getting scarily addicted to the world cup πŸ™‚ Husband is too, which is the bigger surprise – he never watches any sport. I have to get him started on cricket next πŸ™‚

  11. First category so same pinch !

Same pinch , same pinch πŸ™‚

You know I used to wish that I write detailed and informative posts..but then I thought it’s actually like making myself do things because someone is doing..also blogging is all about writing my thoughts and for my sake..if my readers are liking it the way it is,appreciate..if they’re not still appreciate πŸ™‚ It’s all about being yourself..at least this is the place where you can be YOU all the time πŸ™‚

I agree. Which is why, while I do wish sometimes, I never do it πŸ™‚ It is not me πŸ™‚

And moreover when there are other who are writing the detailed informative posts that means it’s getting balanced somewhere πŸ™‚

Absolutely! Every blogger has their space πŸ™‚

There is no particular time of the day that prompts me to blog..or write a quality post..it’s as and when that I feel like and come across something to pen about,I do !

Thats how I do it too.

    • Ya no specific time.. there are days when I wake up from sleep in the middle of the night, and jot down something/type or run out of the shower (makes me think many times that I should keep a notepad ready in the bathroom πŸ˜› Wonder why ideas strike at those exact times, I haven’t a clue πŸ˜‰

We love sports, football, cricket and Tennis πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Dinner/cooking/blogging/reading everything gets postoned when a game is on… But I do love the rain more attimes πŸ˜›

  12. I finish it at one go… or else write from beginning…
never have enough patience to wait to publish once some idea strikes me

Looks like I do have company πŸ™‚

  13. My writing patterns change depending on how much time I have at hand.

I write when I feel like (I mean, if I feel, let’s post something, I can come up with something in a jiffy, such posts get posted the moment they are ready πŸ˜› )

But when it comes to fiction, it is usually something that’s been brewing in my mind (the funniest part being, I start my stories based on a single phrase or at times just one dialogue in mind, yeah no plot thought before commencing to write) But I always end them in a totally different way from the point I initially started.

Basically I have plenty of writing trends happening at different times. If I am up to writing a series they sometimes sit in my draft for sometime.

I don’t do much of a research, but I definitely do fair bit of reading (that doesn’t include reading books).

As far FIFA fever, it’s full on in my household. But with the work being over-demanding in the past few days, we find it impossible to stay awake, for all games commence at 12 midnight of our time 😦 😦

Overall, I am not a disciplined blogger, but I have evolved and changed dramatically over the time πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  14. I do both – write in one go and post.
Some, I keep drafts, those are the ones which might need a bi more editing or some research..
Most of my stories are kept in drafts and then, I post them depending on whether I want to or not… Some do get deleted because the moment would have gone by!

  15. Hmm inspiration strikes me suddenly and once I get some idea the post is usually half ready in my mind. I keep playing it again nd again & as I start keying it, it flows!!! Earlier I used to write & publish it in a hurry without proof reading! But later when I used to go back and read it I wud find embarrasing mistakes! Thus now I have started reading & improvising the posts πŸ™‚

I have very few drafts and that too in Word not in blogger πŸ™‚

  16. My posts seem to be a bit interesting when I write them ‘in a go’ with full of ideas. Thinking and writing is a bit difficult.

Husband and son are watching soccer matches. I don’t fancy it!

I am very particular about replying to the comments. They spend time to READ my post, whether it is interesting or not!

You people have got patience to write interesting posts everyday, hats off to you and all the NaBloPoMo writers (had to think this word or else I might write ‘NaLooPoNa)! All the best Smitha!

  17. I blogged about this too!! It’s very interesting to know how others find the time and when they write & what makes them write!!!

I write when I feel like sharing something. Sometimes I don’t post for days. I generally write with lots of interruptions… maids, kids, phone calls go on side by side πŸ™‚

I don’t feel like discarding the drafts, I think I have more than a hundred (much more ;)) drafts even now.

And I nearly always make the post almost half the size it originally was. Now let me continue reading what everybody else does πŸ™‚

  18. Interesting post and interesting thoughts in the comments.

As for me, it varies. Sometimes, a post is done at one go and sometimes I take a few hours to finish it… in the sense, take a break, do something in the meantime and then come back to finish it.
And I don’t have any draft post…all posts are written with ‘start to finish’ aim! πŸ˜›
    I research a bit. πŸ™‚

I don’t research at all, I wish I had the patience and the time to do more research – but then those posts are not me, I guess πŸ™‚

  19. Ditto Smitha, I write at one shot. Not much time for anything more. Or perhaps that is my safest excuse πŸ˜‰ for all shortcomings πŸ™‚

  20. I guess I do all the three…. at times its write and publish at one go… sometimes a little research… sometimes a lot of thought over post… πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

That is the best combination, I suppose πŸ™‚

  21. yes I usually finish off posts at one go. drafts are usually messy. but sometimes i do end up writing an outline and leaving the filling up for later…

  22. I am in the first category too… and that is a bit of a problem, when the idea comes… and I dont have a pc I feel bad… the idea then eventually gets lost… !! and when I am on the pc and I dont get an idea its weird… !!!

I know I need to research at times… but that depends on the speed of the internet.. I dont link too much… I do read at times and correct the grammatical mistakes or spellings at times… but most of the posts are in one go… !!!

  23. Oh I m the second one. I write save drafts and then work on it to make it better. πŸ™‚ Thats why I think I’ll never be able to do NaBloPoMo
