Vampires and other scary stuff..

Can you even imagine falling in love with a vampire?

Well, I watched Twilight last night and could not bring myself to reconcile to the concept of someone falling in love with a vampire. It left me feeling squeamish and worried at the same time that he would bite her by mistake. Although I have to say that the movie was fascinating.. I am now waiting to watch the next one. Husband was surprised to see my interest in it – I am normally very lazy about watching movies,( and movies of this genre, even more so) but for some reason, this one caught my imagination. Β Have any of you read the books? Is it worth the read or are the movies better?

Talking about fantasy/horror movies.. How comfortable are you with watching them? I am really, really uncomfortable with them. I much rather curl up with a nice book. Husband, on the other hand loves horror/fantasy/sci-fi movies. He can’t have enough of them. He does not even give up when it is too scary for him. One time, he saw so many horror movies, that he actually mistook me for a ghost, and screamed the house down πŸ™‚ In his defense, Poohi and me had just returned from India, and he had spent the whole month that we were away, watching his scary movies and then the day we got back, had a scare of his life because he forgot that we were back πŸ™‚

Talking about vampire and scary stuff, I still remember how badly I wanted to read Dracula. There was a phase in school when all of us chanced upon Dracula and wanted to read the book. We were a crazy bunch of kids, all book snobs, who wanted the real unabridged version, of which there were not too many copies in our library. and I remember the wait for the book and then the non-stop reading..

But I think, this genre of books were not really my thing. I would read them if I had nothing else to read, but not by preference. Β So what kind of person are you? Can you watch a horror movie without having to cover your face or flinching every time?

  1. I’m a fantasy person by my nature and like a bit of horror thrown in – but I am not a Twilight person. The books were dull and while the first movie was not terrible, the sequel was a disaster.

Welcome here, Cassandra Jade πŸ™‚ And thanks for warning me. I will lower my expectations if I do watch the sequel πŸ™‚

  2. I hear you, Smitha…I too HATE horror, fantasy and sci-fi movies…I don’t and don’t want to understand their appeal…’Avatar’ for instance – I have no idea what the hullabaloo was about…The only thing going for it in my opinion was the 3D bit…

I did not even try and watch Avatar – I was quite sure that it would not be my thing. Husband went and watched it with his friends πŸ™‚ I don’t understand the appeal either!

    • I am very scared of everything scary. Horror movies are out of question for me.

      Same pinch πŸ™‚

Though I have not seen any of the Twilight movies so far, I am a huge fan of the Twilight books and have read the full series.
I know it sounds strange, it does so to me as well, but I liked the book once I started reading it πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Really? I think I should read the books then! I might like the books more than the movie , as I usually do πŸ™‚

  3. Yes, I watched this movie with my daughter once – she has seen it 5 times so far…my daughter is so crazy abt it…everything she sees or hears, she relates it to something in that Twilight movie. I didnt like it at all…I dont like scary movies…the crying ones are better for me.

    Me too πŸ™‚

Actually, my girls have read all the books in this series…maybe I can ask their review on books.

Wow! Do ask! Get them to do a guest review πŸ™‚

I think its like Harry – this too will change and give way to something else.

I do think Harry Potter was far better πŸ™‚ But the kids might disagree πŸ™‚

    • R u doing Nablopomo ???? There is a post on every day in June !!! πŸ™‚

I am doing it. Though at times I curse myself for thinking it was do-able πŸ™‚

  4. Falling in love with a vampire??? hmmm…I hope that question is directed only at the female lot here ! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

There are female vampires too! Go watch that movie πŸ˜‰

As cliche` as it sounds, the books are better than the movie; thats what my cousins say !! πŸ˜€

I always feel that books are better than movies πŸ™‚

and you know what I feel about horror movies, na? and you already mentioned in that post of mine that you scared your hubby !! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ Btw, that day, were you with your makeup or without ? πŸ˜‰

Did I already mention it 😦 With or without makeup – indeed πŸ™‚

  5. I used to avoid the horror genre, but now I have begun. I usually find that nothing in either the films or the books (at least those I have read/seen so far) are anywhere close to what I imagine them to be. πŸ™‚ I think a lot of the classic horror masters such as Stoker and Le Sheriden may have been cutting edge in those days, but after films began showing people who are far more pervertedly sadistic than any ghost used to be, they seem milder. The Hills have Eyes and the Saw series are more likely to make me cringe.

Welcome here Careless Chronicles. I would not even attempt the Saw series πŸ™‚ I still avoid horror. Twilight was not so much horror as fantasy, I felt πŸ™‚

    • guily there πŸ˜›
I did watch the Saw series… hee hee:)

You did! I have nightmares just thinking of watching it πŸ™‚ I steered clear of it πŸ™‚

I don’t think I can make myself see them again!!
But I don’t like too much horror either,
Vampires and ghost stories and some sci-fi… well ghastly horror horror and big no no for me, and u want me having nightmares !!

Same here πŸ™‚ I like to stay away from scary stuff πŸ™‚ Twilight was not very scary – considering that I could sit through it πŸ™‚

  6. I feel twilight shouldn’t come under horror genre, its more of romance with horror spices. Read all books in the series. Other three books (new moon, eclipse and breaking dawn) are not much interesting as twilight–the first book. Its worth reading if you have no other great book to read.

Welcome here. I agree, it is more fantasy than horror – but it was still scary for a horror virgin like me πŸ™‚ Ok, I think I have plenty of better books to read, at the moment πŸ™‚

  7. Though I am scared of horror movies, but I loved twilight, and hoping to read the entire novels series soon and watching the next sequel.. πŸ™‚

You too πŸ™‚ I am in two minds about reading the books at the moment πŸ™‚

  8. I am a fan of scary movies…and I don’t think twilight is scary..I thought it was dumb…a movie for love lorn teenage girls..

Wow! I am impressed! My horror threshold is rather low πŸ™‚

Though I do not like movies with Jam and jelly in it and too much of gore like ‘Hostel’ or ‘Saw’, a scary movie like Omen is really a treat…

You did! Wow! Horror and I are worlds apart.

I know most people do not like Horror movies…for me I watch and forget them…

    πŸ™‚ I wish I could do that!

  9. Oh I am sh*t scared of horror films… all I need to scare me off is some eerie music and a shadow… that’s enough to get me trembling!!! How did u manage to watch it??

Me too! Twilight was not too bad, to be honest – it was more fantasy, than horror, to be honest.

  10. I liked the books, but I don’t like horror movies. period.
    I don’t watch either!! I’m too scared! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

I get scare watching Aahat!! So, yea, no horror for me…
books – I can read.. somehow, even though the pictures and the narration becomes vivid in the head, its ok… but, no horror movie watching for me! πŸ˜€

  11. I think I am just like u Smiths .. nt that I am scared altogether, but somehw such books dnt interest me too πŸ˜›
And movies too .. I am like u πŸ™‚ I feel better to curl up and read a book than sit watching one πŸ˜› I am very very selective when it comes to movies πŸ™‚

  12. I loved the first part the second was such a waste!
Vampire love stories don’t scare me – its the Japanese ones that make me jumpy – the ones with kids as ghosts like Grudge, Ring and all…

PS: I don’t close my eyes or look away, I just squeeze AB’s hand real hard, he refuses to see horror movies with me fearing my assaults πŸ˜›

  13. Fantasy is one thing, Twilight, especially the later parts, is pure crap. Book 1 and movie 1 are alright, the book being better than the movie, but the subsequent parts make you cringe.

  14. I am not a fan of horror movies; but like those are close to Mystery. I liked the book Twilight more than the movie; the effects were better for me imagining from the book than seen on screen. I did not like the other 3 sequels though.

  15. LOL!!I read that bit about your husband and laughed soo loudly woke up Aadi..my DH is the same..he is a movie/tv buff and watches all scary stuff..even if it scares him..and the same thing has happenned with him too!
As for twilight,I read the first two books and read in anticipation ..then,lost interest..I dont think I’ll read again..
A friend is going for twilight marathon..all the movies back to back..Idont think i can sit thru even one!
    And ditto on Avatar!
    Sorry for the longgggg comment!

  16. I am not much of a fan of scary movies. But have seen Twilight. And read it, as well as the New Moon and now reading Eclipse.
I found the movie better than the book, may be coz its racy and fast paced!!

  17. Nowadays I am not big on horror…. I love Sci-Fi and suspense though. Just horror and the creepy kind.. well gives me the creeps.. go figure!
However, I used to be the general one who’d not get scared or pretend to not get scared.

Currently I am hookied to Lost and I refuse to watch it without SD. I need him by my side, incse i get too scared by the next suspense move!

  18. No horror movies or books for me, no no no. Did I tell you no horror for me πŸ™‚
After a lot of persuasion from my husband, I agreed to watch Avatar on DVD last Friday and while he was enamored by the virtual world James Cameroon has created, all I did all the time was make a scary face at him like a cat trying to shoo away a bigger animal she is scared of πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
Neither fantasy nor horror for me, I like real life better πŸ™‚

  19. Ayyo am imagining little Poohi kutty trying to scare N off

I do watch certain kind of Horror movies. But yeah when it is too gory with blood and human parts strewn around I prefer to switch it off 😳 I still love to watch the older horror classics.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwww you like Twilight?? God I can’t figure out one thing in that white faced, spring haired Vampire that a girl would find attractive 😑 Smi the book is real crap material. I read it as I came to know of it’s weird existence on the Oprah show. That author is someone you can easily keep a distance from.

Ps: The only good thing about the movie was Taylor Lautner, the actor who played the role of Jacob….hmmm handsome dark hunky eye candy, I tell ya πŸ˜‰

Jacob! Aaah! He is some eye candy, Am watching the second part, and Jacob is the only reason I am watching it πŸ™‚ He is just soooo good looking!

  20. I love true horror movies… Not the one which makes me to disgust with all the gore and blood… I dont like books of this genre… I better watch it πŸ™‚
If you want to watch a good horror movie i recommend 13B… Its one of the best i Have seen πŸ™‚

  21. I am scared of English horror movies, Hindi is OK!

I read ‘Exorcist’ when I was pregnant with my first child and all my relatives were scolding me for reading that type of books during pregnancy, it is not good for the baby…most of them were asking me to read ‘Sundara Kaandam’! I was scared but finished the book. Saw the movie also later which was a very diluted version of the book.

I have watched some scary movies in TV but don’t fancy them much. I haven’t watched Dracula though had glances of it while channel surfing! Had watched glimpses of ‘Twilight’ also!

  22. I enjoy horror. As for fantasy, I can watch Lord of the Rings any number of times, but not Twilight and the Harry Potter variety. Those suck. I am not even sure if Twilight can be called a horror film.

I LOVED Lord of the Rings! I love fantasy of that sort πŸ™‚ Harry Potter – I loved the books, the movies weren’t close. Yes, twilight is more romantic fantasy, than horror.
    Quirky Indian

  23. The book series is interesting. Surprisingly I got caught up deeply with the love story (normally am not a sucker for love stories). Read three parts in a row and for some reason the fourth part’s lying untouched at home. Don’t know why. Maybe will get to it someday.
Anyway, couldn’t sit through the first part’s movie. Didn’t bother seeing the second part. Think it’s because the characters were more beautiful in my mind πŸ™‚
Btw, have you read The Time Traveler’s Wife? Completely bowled over it. Want to know your thoughts on it.

    • I loved The Time Traveler’s Wife! Absolutely wonderful read! I read a while back or I would have loved to do the review of that book πŸ™‚

We just got the dvd of the second part so will see how I feel watching it. I am quite sure that I would have not enjoyed the movie, had I read the book first.

  24. “One time, he saw so many horror movies, that he actually mistook me for a ghost, and screamed the house down πŸ™‚ ”
    hehe thats sooo funny… πŸ™‚

“In his defense, Poohi and me had just returned from India…..”
now, dont you mean to say ” In my defense….”
    hahaha
just kidding.. how have you been….

      • yeah has been a while.. the little one is fine, thanks πŸ™‚
have been catching up on a few of your posts.. looks like i have a huge list:)

I have started this Nablopomo thingy and have been doing a post a day in June 😦

  25. This movie can’t be considered as a horror or scary movie. It is a teenage fantasy movie.I have seen the first part without much expectations. So i loved it.Like it was a quite innocent -clean movie. But i was stopped by my friends from watching the 2nd part (new moon).Anyways this girl at my neighborhood took a pledge to make me read all the books and watch all the movies in twilight series.I just brought the book “the short second life of Bree tanner”(latest in twilight series)….will pass u the feedback once i finish it πŸ™‚ .

P.S : Most of the blogvasis know my craze for horror-fiction stuffs πŸ™‚

  26. The books are as bad…in fact the love scene descriptions are beyond cheesy. I know I am in the minority in this regard, but I feel you are better off in the movie….at least there is some eye candy πŸ˜‰

  27. Twilight is actually quite funny πŸ˜€ Kristen knows no acting beyond biting her lips, keeping her shoulders shrugged, her eyebrows frowned and a permanent constipated look on her face. Robert is equally hopeless.
