Onam wishes and dishes

Onam is here, it’s tomorrow! And a lot of us have been waiting for it..

One of the things I enjoy about not working is the fact that I get to celebrate festivals better.  The first time I made a Onasadya was last year – before that, the day would come and go. The last time I actually celebrated Onam was when I was at home with parents, a long long time ago.. Those days, I was not particularly fond of the sadya. I was more fond of north indian cuisine. When I got married to a non mallu, funnily, he turned out more fond of the sadya that I was. But over the years – probably, thanks to the fact that I hardly get to eat it, I have been craving mallu food.

Last year, I did make the sadya and had a friend over for lunch and we had planned to enjoy Onam – but daughter had other plans. She managed to fall and hurt herself and I managed to spend the afternoon in the accident and emergency in the Hospital and my poor friend did not even get to have lunch 😦 This year, hopefully, it will be different, good different hopefully. I also plan to make the pookalam, the flower carpet, welcoming Mavelli home, which I hope daughter enjoys too.

Today, some of us planned to have a virtual Ona sadya – to make some of you drool 🙂 So here are my contributions… Avial and Pal Payasam. Please hop over to Deeps’ for more info and more yummy recipes!

Avial

Avial is a sort of mixed vegetables. And it has been a favourite of mine since years.

Ingredients

Mixed vegetables  – 2 cups.

Vegetables like carrots, yam, raw mango, green beans, drumsticks, snake gourd sliced into 1 1/2 inch pieces – something like french fries.

Turmeric – 1/2 tsp

grated coconut – 1/2 cup

Green chillies – 2 (I use 2 as the chillies I get here are super spicy – please use according to taste)

Cumin seeds  – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

Oil – 1 tbsp

Curd – 2 tbsp

Method

Heat the oil in a thick bottomed dish.

Add turmeric and cook the washed and chopped vegetables  on a low flame until they are cooked.

While the vegetables are getting cooked, grind coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and curd into a smooth paste.

Once the vegetables are done, add salt and the coconut paste and coconut paste and the curry leaves. Cook until any excess water is evaporated.

And now for the dessert.

Pal Payasam

Ingredients
Milk 1 litre. (Full Cream Milk)
Sugar 100 gms
Water 1 cup (120ml)
Rice 4 tablespoon (I use Basmati rice)

Garnishing
1. Elaichi 3 powdered – I am not too fond of the taste of elaichi – so I normally avoid it.
2. Cashewnuts and raisins – as per taste

Method

Use thick bottomed pressure cooker with vent.
1. Boil Milk – adding water .
2. Add the washed and cleaned rice in boiling milk.
3. Keep the pressure on and cook on low flame for 35 to 40 minutes. (no whistle required).
4. After the pressure has cooled down open the cooker.
Mix thoroughly, boil for 5 minutes in medium flame.
5. Now add the Sugar and cook for another 10 minutes.
6. Garnish with the dry fruits

Slurp up!

  1. That was yumy yum yum!!You already made the dishes??I’m planning to make them tomorrow. One of my friends(Namnam’s friend’s mother) who lives in the same building is planning to make Avial & Adapradaman and I’ll b making sambar & erisseri .So it will be a joined effort, although will have lunch at our respective homes with the family 🙂 !leaving to buy all the stuff from the supermarket in a while!so excited!

Wow! We had that plan, but my friend has an exam day after tom – which she forgot about 🙂 So I told her that I will do the cooking and all I want is for them to come 🙂 And we are having the sadya in the evening – tomorrow -instead of lunch time – I am the only vella one here 😦 I did all the shopping yesterday 🙂 I made just these two so that I could take pics and post them 🙂 Though I know, should n’t be feeding people one day old food 😦

“One of the things I enjoy about not working is the fact that I get to celebrate festivals better.”I can so relate with you,Smits. And also the fact that we’re away from home makes us want to do all those traditional things that we grew up watching & doing,by which we stay rooted and our kids too are aware of them.

I know! I never thought of this aspect of things earlier but ever since Kunju came into our lives – I think my perspective has changed..

Onam aashamsakal to you too,Smits and lots of special payasam-ummas to Kunju 🙂

Onam aashamsakal to you too, Deeps and lots of wishes and ummas to Namnam 🙂 Kunju has already inaugurated the payasam 🙂

    • Same with me smitha, before never celebrated festivals like what we used to do in india, now at home and want kids to know the festivals which i enjoyed in india. The only festival we used to celebrate here were diwali and sankrantri(telugu new year)

I know! It is funny, isn’t it? How our priorities, our perspective change after we become mothers!

  13. Smitha, I am just drooling since morning. Everywhere I turn, there is a Onasadya or talk about it. Friends from Denver calling and asking us to join them which of course we can’t do because things are just too hectic here.

🙂 Yes, there is ona sadya everywhere, this year 🙂

Love you aviyal and payasam recipes. Are you making entire spread? Me making it on weekend.
Yes, planning to 🙂 But we are having it for dinner instead 😦 Having friends over and am so excited about it 🙂 We are planning to go for a Malayali association sadya on saturday 🙂

Here’s wishing you and Poohi mol a happy and prosperous Onam!
Thank you Sols! Wish you and Peanut kutty a very happy and properous Onam too!

    Onaashamsakal!

    • Aah! me miss..me miss. I really miss Denver and my Malayali friends now. We have none here..Arre Indians hi rare breed hain yahaan. 😆

Okay! when you eat sadya tomorrow, eat everything double for me too. I will reduce weight here. Ha..ha..ha..

Just spoke to mom and she is done with most of the stuff like achaar and inji curry and all. They have a family reunion Onam thing after couple of days. So two Onams at our home. 😦 😦 Then entire family going to Munnar. Tell me why the hell am I here? 😦

      • BTW in our parts of Kerala (TVM-Quilon), aviyal is dry. That is no curd/yogurt. But I love it mush-mush so I add yogurt when I make aviyal. The healthiest of all items. Droool!

          • We use Raw Mango for that puli taste. I use yogurt for making it mush-mush. I don’t like it too dry but you come to TVM, you will get dry aviyal with no yogurt at all. 🙂

Oh wow! Raw mango – I love the taste of raw mango. I got some raw mangoes here – in the India store, a couple of months back, so I chopped them and preserved them with salt.. Will see if I can make mango pachadi out of that tomorrow.. But these mangoes were not as sour – like the ones we get in India 😦

I just gulped the water in my mouth. 😀 Drool fest going on!

🙂 Did you see Deeps’ – Her sambhar and erisseri look so so so yum!

        • i guess only aviyal is dry for us(kollam/trivandrum), unlike palakadu/thrishur(northern part of kerala) side , we prefer curry/gravy to mezhukuparaty/or other dry foods ….

      • Oh – I can imagine that! Here, luckily we found some friends who are like us – half mallu half non mallu 🙂 So we are celebrating together 🙂

Eat double – will do – definitely at the other sadya – mine – I can’t promise 😉

You know – my parents had a Onam gettogether at home yesterday – and tomorrow they are all having lunch at my dad’s elder brother’s place – Seriously – what are we doing here!!!! missing all that!

  14. “snake gourd sliced into 1 1/2 inch pieces – something like french fries. ” nice analogy.

🙂 That seemed the easiest way to explain 🙂 Everbody knows french fries 😉

  15. I hate you guys !!! Im all sick and feverish here, and everyones busy making Onasadya !!! Every year for Onam, I used to be with my parents. and this year, Im on my sickbed ! Hmmpphhh !!! Grumble……..

Oh dear!!! Is that post-engagement fever an aftereffect of the engagement? Hope you are better now. Don’t worry about the Ona sadya – you can enjoy your wedding sadya soon 😉

  16. Smithu is getting on with her work at home when she hears a knock on the door… she opens it and sees….

    EOG in lungi….drooling

LOL! EOG in his national dress 😉

    Kumbakaran aka Crafty ….. drooling
    Bakasur aka Swaram…. drooling

*Smitha jumps in joy! Some more bakras to feed! Yay! Now she hopes of food not getting dumped into the bin *
    PAL PAYASAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that, that is done. Can I add that it is very very mean of you to add those mouthwatering photos, and not share the dishes. No no no, I don’t want a virtual bite, I want the real stuff!!

  21. happy oman!!! my mouth waters at the mention of the onam sadhya.. thanks for sharing the recipes. i love avial! tried making it a few times, not too succesfully tho! 😛

  22. Happy Onam!

Made some early morning cooking this year since I cant get away from work.. nd the proper Sadhya will have to wait until tonight…

Avial is great dry or watery 🙂 nd I am now not sure which one I like better.. nd if I search for recipes they all seem to be different.. this year’s Olan turned out differently than last year’s!

but I liked the way Solilo asked.. “what are we doing here”? this seems to be the question most of us are asking these days… 🙂 specially when one cant eat a proper Sadhya on Onam!

  23. Hey Happy Onam and thanks for the recipes. They look so yummy, wonder how they’ll turn out when I try them–do share pics of your flower carpet too-Hope you enjoy ur day!

Waise Smits, your new post is going to be on the dinner-sadya right???

  25. All of you have gone nuts, just preparing food and clicking pictures…

    Everyone of you :-/

It’s been 40 years of the internet but there is yet no way to transfer the real stuff yet… so we can only make do with pictures.

  26. Happy Onam Smitha !

    Thank you so much, Renu!

I also make payasam very frequently, we call it Kheer, sometimes I mix a little khoya or powdered milk or even some barfi(if its there at home) to make it more delicious.

Wow! That sounds interesting – I will give that a try next time 🙂

  27. Yummyyyyyy da! I love Mallu food and clothes and jewellery too!

You do 🙂 I love the clothes and jewellary too! And I feel so bad that I don’t have any mallu clothes to wear right now 😦
