Hair Cutting sagas..

I wish I could ‘raise’ my hair to be nice and obedient, to follow my directions, to listen to me.. But alas..haircuts and I have a funny relationship. I think I must have been cursed sometime.

The day I get a haircut, I feel like the most glamourous woman in the world. My hair cascades down(so what if it just about reaches me ears! – I still like using words like ‘cascading’ in connection to my hair;), just as it is meant to.. It is all shiny and glossy and well set. It swirls around when I swirl – and believe me, I do a lot of it the day I get a haircut πŸ™‚ Β It makes me look (in my mind, if not anybody else’s) like one of those glamourous women on TV πŸ™‚ The hairstylist assures me that it is perfectly manageable. All I need to do it run the straightener through it. or even without it – it should be just fine.

And then my luck changes.

Day 2 – A few locks of hair decide to defy all the drying and straightening. Not too bad, it just adds a little element of dishevel to the hair style.

Day3 – A few more follow the trend of defying all my efforts of taming them and following the original hairstyle.

Day4 -Hair in every possible direction! Gone are those swirly, cascading locks of hair. Β I hate my haircut!!! How on earth can this haircut be called ‘manageable’!!! Straightener goes into hibernation until the next haircut. Next time, I am having an easy to maintain haircut! No more fancy haircuts! And then start the laments – why can’t I have a haircut which stays perfect, why can’t I have cascading hair:( *sob sob*

I am so getting a manageable haircut – the moment this cut grows out!!! And so the cycle starts all over again:( and I will always wish I had the kind of hair that dreams are made up of and the patience to keep it that way..

Have any of you had this horrible hair-relationship?

Goodness! You guys are so talented!! If I have to do ‘arz kiya hain’ – I will have to be re-born as a poet – in this birth – no such luck 😦

  2. You wont believe but I have a post in my drafts since wrong.. some how the timing of the post was just not happening…

You know – why don’t you take it up as tag πŸ™‚

I have always had irritating straight hair… Sadhna cut as they call it… they are determined to cover my fore-head all the times…

Sadhna Cut – on a man πŸ™‚ πŸ˜† I wish I had straight hair! I have wavy hair with a mind of it’s own 😦

geeez… I m infact fed up with my hair.. and it doesnt look very decent but or else I would always have a crew cut… lesser the hair the better it is… really…
πŸ™‚ Mu husband does that now – gets it cut really short πŸ™‚

    • Yeah Dhiren, Even I have straight hair which I don’t really like. Earlier, as you said, my hair used to always fall and cover my forehead – Ajay Devgan style and I hated it… Then I resorted to keeping it short and spiked. Try it, it’ll look good.

Yes, I think spiked hair looks quite good.

And now, I had to grow it really long to make it go all the way back and I have to make it stay there with Hair bands and gel!
I really liked your previous avataar – with the long hair πŸ™‚

And the irony is that my wife, all the time wishes, she had straight hair like me!
      πŸ˜† I can imagine that!

      • Am waiting for a better long hair picture and then will update my gravatar again πŸ™‚

Great, waiting for it πŸ™‚ Hope your wife doesn’t kill you for growing it again πŸ™‚ She doesn’t like it, does she?

        • Growing it again? I haven’t cut my hair yet. πŸ™‚

This picture is a old one, and you’re right – she hates it, *psst* but all the other girls / women like it πŸ˜‰

oh is it? I thought this was a recent one πŸ™‚ ‘but all the other girls / women like it ;)’ Ladkon ko bhi nahi chodoge????

  3. so true…
feel so confident to take on the world
when we r out of the salon…
    but come day 2,3,4,5,…and phfftt…

Oh you too πŸ™‚ Great to know that I have company πŸ™‚ Welcome here zinggy_mum πŸ™‚ And please do leave your url πŸ™‚

  4. i guess most of us have this kind of relationship.. i have learnt no to get hassled. and in my case, i think i need to give it a week’s time to look okay to my eyes..

Yes, I think the true look of the hair cuts comes through only in a week’s time πŸ™‚

also i tell the hair dresser to just give them a cut and dry only slightly.. no setting and styling to avoid the post hair wash disappointment back home.

That does make sense- but I can’t resist πŸ™‚ I love getting styled by them πŸ™‚ And funnily enough – the style stays intact even after washing – for the first 3-4 days – and then it’s downhill πŸ™‚

I have shoulder length short layers which i tie into a small funny pony most of the times πŸ˜›
That sounds cool πŸ™‚ I have ear length hair at the moment 😦

    • u must take up the dare to show us the pic of ur ear length hair πŸ™‚ i always wanted the shortest possible hair(not bald tho) but till date hv not been able to show that much guts in the saloon.. that will be a drastically diff look. but i guess once in life i am gonna try that.

Will try and see if I can convince hubby to take one of mine – he will make so much fun of me that I am scared to ask πŸ™‚

Go for it once, and see how you feel πŸ™‚ I love all lengths of hair- but I have never had more than shoulder length – I lose patience after that πŸ™‚

  5. Yes, I too have a bad relationship with hair…I don’t have much and whatever I do is falling off…The strands are limp and thin…I envy people who have hair – be thankful…

Falling hair is part of my woes too 😦 I hardly have enough and those do not even behave 😦

  6. I suffered a lot before smitha, not now because i no longer cut my hair. Before i used to have blunt cut and it was so difficult to manage it, every day night used to wet my hair at the ends and curl it inside with a hair clip.My hair is very soft and thin. Now i just trim the edges once in two months thats all.And also i am loosing my hair 😦

I can’t grow my hair 😦 Too thin and it becomes even more messy long.. So I prefer to keep in short – atleast it stays less messy πŸ™‚

    • Even my hair is too thin.It is soft and silky and becomes oily by evening after taking head bath and looks like i have applied tonnes of oil.

I don’t have that problem – just that my hair just does not behave! It has a mind of it’s own πŸ™‚

  7. Every person’s story.. πŸ™‚

maybe that’s why they had those long plaits back then.. apply oil and braid them.. πŸ˜‰

See – there is a reason to everything πŸ™‚

  8. Aawwww. Poor smitha. I had have managable hair , lovely and straight only hitch is I am left with very few of them !! πŸ˜₯

‘I had have managable hair , lovely and straight’ – my dream hair!

and at the rate I am losing them ; you know where I am going !! 😦

I have unmanageable hair and very little of it left now 😦 – the only thing that gives me some solace is that women apparently do not go bald πŸ™‚

      • But what makes me wonder you know? I have never used dryer, gel, ironing, coloring ( only henna) , regularly oiled and yet I am having nightmares.(I guess that is true for most of we indian ladies no ? ) And these firangs here use all possible chemicals , gels, masks and yet they have thick and lovely hair. How unfair !! 😦

Actually you are right! I have friends who use the straightener every single day, along with mousse and stuff and yet their hair looks lovely and thick! while ours are falling off 😦

  9. is there anyone who doesn’t have complaints about his/her hairs?
    there always is.

Yes, I guess, that is true πŸ™‚

ofcourse my tales are not as complicated…no straighter, curler, blow drying etc etc in my saga….just good ol crop cut every month..
but i think even that doesn’t make the ‘hair-gods’ happy….
    hairfall is the result..
    so what I do next?
use summers as an excuse and shave of my head…

ha ha πŸ˜† That is funny and a very good way to escape all these horrors!
last ditch effort to avoid going bald.
moreover, i wanted to give my baby some company.
so right now, there are no baldies in my house!
πŸ˜† That is so funny πŸ™‚

    • err…i meant..right now there are two baldies in my house! πŸ™‚

Yes, I got that πŸ™‚ Maybe you should post the pics of both you baldies πŸ™‚

      • ha! ha!

guys, masood with a clear head posing like some big star.. i have such a pic of his in my better half’s cell.. my fingers are itching to put it up.. actually we have masood junior’s baldy pic too.. there would be a touch competition.. i tell u.

Oh I wish Masood would give you permission to publish it πŸ™‚ I am itching to see them πŸ™‚

Masood: you really looked cool on the first bald day πŸ™‚ i realized i didnt compliment u before ..

        • see…now you know where my kiddo got his good looks from! πŸ˜‰

tara – did your hubby dear tell you i shaved my head again?

and thanks for the compliment. baldy head sure feels good…but all the air-conditioning, i actually had to wearing a skull cap to keep my ‘takla’ warm :p

lol @ ‘ i actually had to wearing a skull cap to keep my ‘takla’ warm’ πŸ™‚ Why don’t you post a pic of the 2 of you πŸ™‚

    • and you can imagine the field day my family members had by taking photos of takla father and son…..

They must have had the time of their lives:)

  10. Thank god, I just have a U-cut at the back and use a hair clip. But the front side is the problem. On the day, I don’t plan to go out, the hair looks so silky. On the day I plan to attend a wedding or a reception, my hair sticks to my head and looks oily, even after shampooing or all the short hairs will be flying in all directions…….everyone have got their own hair-raising-tales, Smitha!

That sounds much more manageable πŸ™‚

It always happens doesn’t it? Hair that just refuses to behave when we most want it to! There must be something called hair psychology πŸ˜‰

  11. Tell me abt it Smithu .. I had such long n thick hair all the time that the beauticians I went to never wanted to even get the scissors nearby and I had this all flowing, straight hair till I came to Hyd 2 yrs bk. The salt water n I donno what not, the hair started dropping so badly n I decided to give it a cut. Anoos, Habib all of them have laid their hands on it now and it looks absolutely gorgeous only when they style it diff ways n show it to me on THE DAY. Never again does the same look come back. All the cuts look sooooooo similar πŸ˜›

‘had this all flowing, straight hair’ – wow!!! How I wish I had hair like that!

And all these hair stylists have magic in their hands! They can style it so well!!! I just wish I could replicate their magic at home too πŸ™‚

  12. I feel raising in the title should be replaced with ‘cutting’ hehe he. I have always been in love with my hair and i take its out most care. I keep the cut very short and easy to maintain. In simple words ‘haath maaro & ready types πŸ˜‰ but yes i hate unkempt hair. Each strand should be in its place πŸ™‚

I changed it πŸ™‚ Arre – ”haath maaro & ready types’ That is what I always ask them for – and thats what they say too – but at the end of the cut comes out the straightener and then they do their magic – so I don’t stop them – I love it – and am forever disappointed coz I can never replicate it at home..

      • Vimmu, you sure you’ve vision? Ah! I know you don’t know how to use them πŸ˜€

Nice One, Smita πŸ™‚ Maybe we should all contribute and buy Vimmuuu a pair of glasses πŸ™‚

  13. Smitha, be grateful to God that you have hair!!! Even if they are manageable for a day and make you look like a glam doll for a day, and giive you joy…for all you know on other days you look even better!

That is a valid point πŸ™‚

Husbands don’t usually look! Just kidding!
Now why does that not surprise me at all πŸ™‚

  14. Smithus, with my hair, everyday is a bad hair day!! 😦

Ugh! Its unmanageable and always unmanageable!

Same here – Except the 3-4 days after a haircut 😦

  15. Smitha this is MY story too :/

    You too πŸ™‚

I always feel on top of the world after a haircut and then the same cycle repeats itself that you have mentioned here and back to square one it is πŸ˜₯

I know 😦 I wish I could look the same forever and ever πŸ™‚ Today, I decided to give it another try – dryed it, straightened it – but alas, my hair has a mind of it’s own 😦

    I have unmanageable hair! 😦

<have any of you had this horrible hair relationship?
    are you KIDDING me?
that question as written for me!

Now, that makes me feel good! Women here have hair like goddesses! They fall perfectly, making me want to unscrew my head and hide it in their presence πŸ™‚

    • rofl@Unscrew my head ROFL!! πŸ˜€
      smitha this was hilarious!!:D

Seriously – I do feel like that sometimes πŸ™‚ or that could temporarily go invisible πŸ™‚ One of the mums at a play group used to look like she stepped out of a magazine – full make up and perfect hair πŸ™‚

  16. LOL@the word cascading in connection to your hair!
me too! I love this word πŸ˜€

I love that word!! And you know what – I never had hair that justified that word!

  17. Smitha in Delhi atleast I trust ‘Habib’s’
..uptil now they have given good, manageable(by my standards) haircuts:)
    *touchwood* πŸ˜€

ok – next time I am in Delhi – thats where I will go πŸ™‚

  18. I tell my stylist, my hair behaves like a school boy. It is fine when it is in front of the teacher (you) but as soon as I leave Juice, it gets a life of its own…

And after growing my hair long, I’ve discovered that ‘wind in the hair’ is not a very good feeling after all…

  19. Like I too keep it short like Smita but not boy cut type. Just enough to make a lil pony tail πŸ™‚ and thankfully my hair is not that unruly.

  20. πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›
i keep my hair short………….as simple as that…… coz i have got really bad hair…… πŸ˜› which is turning white now……….. and i refuse to use dye………..

one more reason for indyeah to call me apoopan πŸ˜› hahaha

  21. my hair is always quite a messier and I am losing them at a steady rate..

‘ am losing them at a steady rate..’ Same here 😦
and I am rarely using comb on it…. Leaving it to its wish of where and how they want to stand on my head… πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

    LOL! You are hilarious !

  22. Ha..ha..ha..ha.. I read the comments first. Now let me read your post. πŸ˜€

BTW Smitha, is there a hand in your avatar or my eyes are seeing too much? I mean is someone putting a hand on your shoulder. Most probably your pati parmeshwar.

No no – your eyes are seeing too much πŸ™‚ Pati Parmeshwar took the pic πŸ˜†

  23. Oh boy! I style my hair very frequently. I get bored of similar hairstyles so everytime I ask them for a different one. Long back I had this obsession with Meg Ryan style and went and had one. Gosh! it looked horrible on me. I looked for ways to hide it. I knew people were just good and complimented yoon hii

Yes, I do that too! I always ask them for something different but manageable πŸ™‚ and while it always turns out different – it never turns out manageable:) Meg Ryan πŸ™‚ You know, in your current avataar – you look a lot like a cousin of mine πŸ™‚

Finally a friend said, what is good for Meg Ryan need not be good for Solilo…..except if it is Russell Crowe. πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

    Russell Crowe πŸ™‚ Yum!!!

    • May be we are related. πŸ˜†

πŸ˜† Yes, maybe some unknown link πŸ™‚

Meg was seeing Crowe then. πŸ˜†

BTW Smitha, do a protein treatment on your hair from a parlor. It smoothens hair really good and also nourishes.

Yes, protein treatments are good. I have some serums too.. which are quite effective actually – when I remember to use them all πŸ™‚

  24. Smitha, Wavy hair is the best. You know it looks best in different styles. Mine is wavy to straight and I like it.

BTW have you tried Beer + Eggs hair treatment. I started at 16 and have been doing it for past 15 years. Now at 31, I still do it and can vouch for it. It gives a natural shine and also straightens hair naturally. Olive oil massage once a week is also good. It conditions hair.

Have to try it. I can’t stand the smell of beer 😦 But will give it a shot πŸ™‚ I do give myself a head massage – whenever I remember πŸ™‚

  25. I have a suggestion – Shave it off completely and try hair weaving ! I heard Gulf Gate is the best ! Im not kidding, one of my friend did it. His hair whatever we do, goes back to the same old weaved mode ! No need of cutting or trimming hair ! No worries about hair falling, dandruffs or greying ! Nooo, Im not working for them; its just that I care about you a lot !!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Ya ya, I can see the ‘care’ dripping from your words;) With friends like you.. πŸ™‚ Why even weave, won’t it be easier to get different wigs – in different hair colours, and different styles – keep changing it every so often:)

    • Nahhh, wigs are dangerous ! They mite reveal the real you in a storm, you see ! Moreoever, you dont want to scare your hubby, do you ??? πŸ˜‰

Right, did not think of that πŸ™‚ I can see that you have thought it through completely though πŸ˜‰ Any plans of weaving πŸ˜‰

  26. Btw you girls spend an awesome amount on the hair.. my budget is 25 rs a month.. so i really cant complain… whatever I get is enough !

Yes, that is also true πŸ™‚ Husband used to faint when he saw the amount earlier πŸ˜‰

  27. i’ve had various saga of hair and haircuts but never about hair being unmanageable. thank God for that. i know it can be painful, I’ve heard many friends lament about it. I did have semi wavy hair when it was long but somehow it always behaved. Right now I have really really short hair which i cut a year ago from waist length πŸ™‚ and it does not require any management at all :D….But I am considering growing it again….so that stage will be cruel…I just know it!

You cut waist length hair???? Why? How could you do that? I have never been able to grow it beyond – just a little lower than shoulder length – lazy me – I give up too soon 😦

Next time you go for a hair cut, ask the lady to just dry your hair and not style so that you can see how it will look in it’s natural form. Styling is very deceptive and one can never do the same styling at home. sucks

I know – but I can’t resist their styling – makes me feel so good – even if it is for just a few days πŸ™‚ I feel so glam when it lasts – makes it worth the disappointment πŸ™‚

  28. I have the greasiest hair on earth. So whenever I really need to have bouncy hair, i have limp, greasy hair. Often enough the effects of a shampoo does not even last a whole day. Sad, sad, sad I tell you. All the best with your hair. Try a permanent straightening/re-bonding if you want straight heir for a while, that might just be a bit more managable.

You do? I don’t have greasy hair -just very unmanageable hair 😦 I know, I should give permanent straightening a shot..

  29. Oh yes,Smitha I so understand your outbursts…I too feel my best when I have had a hair cut,my hair is all bouncy and wavy and silky and smooth…u know I just look down upon all those girls appearing on the shampoo and conditioner adverts who just flaunt their hairdos in style!

I know!! I’m so happy that you know what I mean too πŸ™‚

And then in a span of two three days my hair is at its roughest worst! And then I curse my stylist and myself for having had that cut :/

Me too! I do exactly the same πŸ™‚

BTW its only now that I noticed your gravatar..thats a much clearer image of yours…looks nice:) and poohi is a junju-pappa..tell her that πŸ™‚

I told her – and she says, ‘No, I am a chechi now, not baby’ 😦 She suddenly thinks that she has become a grown up πŸ™‚

  30. smi – why blog settings do not allow replies on comments to be more than 7. Why dont you update it to unlimited? So that we can keep spamming your blog!! πŸ˜€

Changed it to 10 – thats the max πŸ™‚

  31. According to me salons in India are the best. I used to get a step cut and it used to be so good. Abhaa in this US of A, they wash your hair -20 mins for that, then bcos my hair is so thick, I have to sit the conditioner for 10 mins, then finally she gets to work cut cut cut and 1000 questions about my husband and my school life (yes, I am a snob I hate talking about my life to people who cut my hair, people who look into my mouth and rest like them), so she sets them (hallelujah!) and I pay 3$ tips for her (compulsory here, its not hallelujah) and I am out of that god-damn salon showing off my hair. This whole process takes a little more than an hour. And the next day I wash my hair and PUFF—nothing, all the glamour is gone arghhh for this I had to endure that hairdresser’s torture bah. I stopped cutting my hair. I want cascading hair- no not your cascading, i mean real cascading, like sweeping the floor cascading πŸ˜›

I have got used to chatting with all the people you mentioned πŸ™‚ I have a right gossip about everything – weather is the most happening thing here – it changes in the time that she gives me a haircut πŸ™‚ Tips – yes, I remember being told very strictly by my PM – during my first trip to the US about tipping rules πŸ™‚ Now, it just happens πŸ™‚ And it is not very strict here, in the UK, apparently.

You are growing your hair! Wow!! I could never grow it! And add to it the fact that now my grey hair outnumbers black – long hair will also mean more to colour 😦 so growing is probably not an option for me πŸ™‚

  32. hair in every possible direction
    ROFL!!!!
Yes, this time I have that cut where the front/sides are longer than the back – and it not properly set – it looks like I have a really bad hairstylist πŸ™‚

oh no smithu! its true, only the stylist can recreate a look….and they always chipkao the “very easy to manage” dialogue!

I know – Sometimes I wish a magic wand would do the trick – alas no such luck 😦
me got straight hair that’s wavy towards the tips…fairly managable…but can’t do much with it!

with wavy hair like urs, there must be a lot of styles u can try!

Yes, and I try every one of them – with similar results πŸ™‚

i cudn’t even have the “sagar choti” style, u know…the french plait…my hair is too slippery to hold that style!
I used to do that when I had it longer – during college and school days – these days they are too short.

i am very ignorant about hair management…i roam with uncombed hair…to embarrasment of my mom. but smithu, truth is…i can’t manage it! there’s nothing i can do! 😦
it has a will of its own, my hair….it acts straight when it wants to and acts wavy other times! i just leave it or sometimes tie up 2 pony tails…

Same here! My mom still claims it is because I don’t comb it πŸ™‚ But I do – and it is of no help 😦

‘it acts straight when it wants to and acts wavy other times!’ – yes , mine does that too 😦 It gets wavy towards the tips mainly and becomes very messy when it reaches the collars.. then it just turns anyway that it pleases 😦

my haircut for last 6 yrs has been from this gujju parlour lady in my next building…she’s really good!!! when she says manageable…she means it!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

    Wow! That must be wonderful!!!
so long story chota karke…smithu, come lets hug over bad hair fiascos my sista!!! wail! i think we shud forget about it! why think???
let other ppl think instead! πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

    πŸ˜€

    That makes mostest sense πŸ™‚

  33. Even I have this problem. whenever I get a haircut, all my hair stand up like a those of a porcupine for atleast a week before they start settling down!! 😦

ha ha πŸ™‚ the amount of trouble our hair gives us!!!

  34. I studies in Manipal . It has bad water . I lost some hair . Finally , I moved to Bangalore . It has bad water as well , if you don’t get Cauvery supply . (Now I understand the need to fight with Tamil Nadu . Go Kannadigas ! ) So , I sport a 1 degree hair cut , as you guys can see in my profile pic , with a semi-cool trimmed down frenchie . πŸ™‚ My shampoos last longer , I feel lighter , and I don’t own a comb . If only I could emulate that in every other sphere of my life . πŸ™‚

‘Now I understand the need to fight with Tamil Nadu . Go Kannadigas !’ – πŸ˜† I lived in Bangalore too – but did not really face the problem – we might have been getting Cauvery water..

‘My shampoos last longer , I feel lighter , and I don’t own a comb . If only I could emulate that in every other sphere of my life . :)’ – that sounds perfect πŸ™‚ I would have adopted that haircut – if it weren’t for my husband who is threatening to disown me if I experiment any more πŸ™‚

  35. I love my hair cut… I have curly hair. I don’t like it. So I keep it short. The less hair the better. One guy suggested I get straightened. I said thank you. That will lead to more problems!

πŸ™‚ Yes, that makes sense πŸ™‚

  36. I visit the salon for a trim or a style and walk back home with that spring on my steps to be greeted by the hubby who just doesnt notice any change, not even when i actually spell it out to him!! you look just the same..thats when i think i spent way too much on that salon, wont ever go back again…but again after a month or so..I am just itching to go back in there!!

All husband are the same πŸ™‚ My husband notices most of the time because I keep trying different styles- would be hard to miss πŸ™‚

  37. this is exactly what i go thru every time after a haircut…it has happened so many times that i don’t even bother anymore…i’m so used to bad hair days πŸ˜›

πŸ™‚ you too, Ersa, looks like there are loads of us in the same boat πŸ™‚ How have you been? No posts for some time now?

  38. Smitha. There it a technique which keeps your hair “salon straight.” I learnt it about a yr ago (not that i really suffer from bad hair days often πŸ˜‰ ). I will email you later. Ok. πŸ™‚

please please let me in on the secret!!!! Anything for a tip like that! And you have that kind of gorgeous hair too!!

psst. Don’t tell anyone this secret. πŸ˜‰

    no no – god-promise;)
