Drive, Drive , Drive….

…. that’s what we did last weekend. Drive and eat, that is. I did some side seat driving(slow down, slow down!, Β slow down now!) , as I am still to get my driving licence.

We had a Merc for a test drive last weekend as we are in the process of finalising our second car – so that it arrives by the time I get my license, which by the number of times I have had to cancel classes – not happenning any time soon 😦

Anyways, I digress. Husband was super, super excited and all he wanted to do was drive. He did not care where – as far as he got to drive atleast a 100 miles a day! So after millions of arguments, we settled on a zoo + theme park just under 50 miles away from here. Husband confirmed that the weather was good – 22 degrees – Brilliant – Β according to the weather conditions here.

So off we set at around 11:30 on saturday morning – delayed thanks to all the fuss about ‘where’ to go. Β We were supposed to reach there by 12:09 – the ETA as per the sat nav – which by the way was an integrated feature in the Merc, which we were very impressed by – in the beginning only to get disillusioned very soon as our Sat Nav had more features.

Husband, made the most of the drive by touching insane speeds. I was chanting ‘slow down’ as a constant prayer. Apparently it is necessary to touch these speeds and drive more than 100 miles a day to properly ‘test drive’ a car!

Just as we were nearing our destination, we noticed drizzling! Oh no! How are we going to enjoy the adventure park if it rains!!! Finally, when we did reach, the rains had stopped and out we stepped all excited – only to realise that it was not raining Β – but it was very very cold!! Where was the 22 deg??? I did not even get daughter’s and my coats – 22 degrees – who needs coats! Husband had got his – he always has his coat – they are like his second skin. Then it turned out that husband had checked the weather at source – not at destination! Now, there was no way we could go out there and have fun while shivering and getting wet(possibly), so we decided to find something else to do.

Earlier that day, while we had been researching our options, we had seen a steam railway, which is a picturesque ride, almost like a hop on/hop off train through the Yorkshire moors and it had been somewhere close to this place. So we quickly googled and found that it was just 4.5 miles away.

Off we went to find the steam railway. By the time we reached here, it was already 1:30 – and we had had no lunch, so before we did any sightseeing, we went in search of lunch. We found a quaint little Italian restaurant and had the most delicious lunch there. Daughter and I had yummy pasta and husband opted for his boring pizza and then ate my pasta 😑 ! Anyways, after stuffing ourselves, we slowly made our way to Toursist information, only to find that we were too late 😦 Apparenlty the whole round trip takes atleast 3 hours!

So finally, we decided to go in for some retail therapy and spend some money to help resolve the credit crunch and drive home. Β So we drove all the way, to eat and shop πŸ™‚ The bright side was that husband got to drive, and I got to eat and shop. Daughter was a little disappointed as she wanted to see animals and the only animals she got to see were some crystal animals in the mall. She did get to play on a bouncy castle which had a dinosaur painted on it πŸ™‚

  1. I see a lot of me in you… In your ‘slow down’ chants…husband ate all pasta….driving license not yet made…..and many more..

is it πŸ™‚ wow πŸ™‚ Welcome here πŸ™‚

And it reminded me of our drive, drive, drive….all the way from Hyderabad to Pune to Mumbai to Surat to Baroda to Ahmedabad and back.

    Wow!! That is some drive!

  2. hehehehehehehe πŸ˜›

100 miles an hour….. are there no cops in england πŸ˜›

They are much lesser than the US πŸ™‚ And the best part was that even at these speeds – there were loads of cars – faster than us!

  3. what a cruel set of parents your daughter has got.

We know 😦 And we plan to make up for that by taking her out to the zoo – the next time it is sunny πŸ™‚

  4. arreee wah! benz!!!!! wow! smithu!!!!
    why is there no picture??????
ok, am not a car fanatic, but something about the benz that makes my eyes light up!!!!!
Really? The pics are still not downloaded 😦 Not even sure if we took proper pics. We took some pics of the dashboard – to compare with the other cars πŸ™‚

pity u cudn’t ahev fun at the adventure park!!! 😐
Yes, I wish we could have done that 😦 But another sunny day πŸ™‚

hubby ordered pizza n then gobbled ur pasta??!!! tee hee!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
    I know – mean man 😦

poohi got to see crystal animals in the mall? why does that have a sad ring to it? 😦 i feel sad…..
It is sad – the poor thing was all waiting to see animals – the adventure park has a zoo as well.

but bouncing fun!!!! aha!!!! i loved playing on those! had been to this wedding party when i was 5 or 6, and they had this arrangement for kids!! teeeee heeeeee! my parents ahd to drag me off it!!!!
    πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Oh yes – she had a lovely time! We do have to pull her off bouncy castles πŸ™‚ I can imagine your parents dragging you off it πŸ™‚ There is something about bouncy castles- I wish I could get on them πŸ™‚

so it was 22 degrees….and then it got colder?

22 degrees is actually quite pleasant – almost warm by standards here πŸ™‚ Yes, it did get colder 😦
*crafty turns green while seated in non ac bedroom, staring outside awaiting rain*

Oh Crafty! Am sure rains will come soon! – and if you really want to see rains – come here – rains every day 😦

  5. Hahahahahahahaha! It was nice here in leicester. REALLY HOTT!! πŸ˜›

BUT it sounds as if you had a great weekend. πŸ™‚ (even if it was crazy πŸ˜‰ )

Oh Badz!! I’m green with envy! Yes, we did have a good time – despite the weather πŸ™‚

  6. I prefer ti sit in the side seat and drive ya. Its SO much more fun- you can look @ the next car, the guy driving the next car, the sheep, the man on the bike, the shops etc etc… Looks like you had a lot of fun in that 22C weather!!! Poor kid tho’

Oh yeah – there is that benefit πŸ™‚ And I did see some funny looking customised cars – probably should post them πŸ™‚ We did have a lot of fun. Daughter did miss out on her animals – hopefully next week – if the weather permits !

  7. So you guys finalizing a Benz? Lucky you. When I was selecting my car, I had Merc in my scheme of things – E240 or S280. But both my brothers drive Benz. So I was almost forced to explore alternate options for the sake of being different but had made up my mind for a German car and finally picked up the Audi. Which one are you guys finalizing?

No no – We are trying out an Audi and a BMW too(the next 2 weeks).. We are leaning towards the BMW more actually.. Lets see what we finally settle on.

I remember seeing your Audi – it looked really nice! Audi is a really nice car.

    • Cool. Merc, Audi and BWM are top of the line range of cars. Really doesn’t matter which one you pick. All are a piece of beauty!

Yes, Audi is a fantastic car. Driving experience is better than a Merc. But the problem with Audi is that the cars are over-engineered. So you’ll hardly find Audi mechanics or specialists in the market. The only place to service would be the dealership. And they charge a BOMB even for a routine oil change. So, despite being the owner of an Audi and absolutely loving the car, I’d still recommend you to first look at Merc, then either Audi or BMW.

Is it? You recommend a merc? We are yet to decide – wanted to test drive all three first. A lot of our friends have gone in for Audi and they are very happy. I think maintenance is not a big issue – because it is going to be under company lease – so all that is taken care of.

Mercs are the safest cars on the roads and if you expect your daily run to be high, they are the best bets. Maintenance is standard. And you’ll find a number of Benz specialists/mechanics out there. So your not really stuck with the dealership. Plus with a Benz, you really know what to expect. Thats not the case with Audi.

Yes, that is an advantage.. One thing we did not like is that Mercs are too common πŸ™‚ Buses are Mercs , we even saw a Merc ice cream van πŸ™‚ But yes, the driving experience was awesome!

      • Aah, if it is going to be under company lease, then its cool. Moreover, Audi does not give any trouble for the first 3 yrs. Only later things come up.

Yes, we have the lease for 4 years and after that can go for a new car πŸ™‚

Agree. Mercs are way to common these days. There is no novelty left in it anymore. It still has its class but too many on the roads these days.

Yes, thats the only problem with Mercs!

Btw, my next car is going to be a BMW! *Just couple of month into my current car and I’ve already thought of my next car! ;)*

You are too much!!! Already thinking of changing your car!!! Naughty Naughty πŸ™‚

  8. so in the UK , you are allowed to test a car for 100 miles —?

We had it for the whole weekend. I think we got it for so long as it was part of the company lease scheme. Not sure how it is normally in the UK.

  9. sometimes these things happen Smitha πŸ™‚ all get wrong… but we would have learned what needs to be done atleast for next few trips πŸ™‚

That is true – but we did have a fun time – despite everything that went wrong πŸ™‚
/*Daughter and I had yummy pasta and husband opted for his boring pizza and then ate my pasta*/

    ha ha ha πŸ™‚

    /*22 degrees*/

phew.. I am fried up here in 40 degrees.. chennai’s weather is getting hottest 😦

/*Husband had got his – he always has his coat – they are like his second skin.*/

    LOL… πŸ˜†

  10. LOL. That sounds like an adventure I would be a part of. I love your optimism though. I would have cursing my head off right after we found out it was too cold. I love that you made it a fun trip none the less. Great story, I loved every bit of it.

Thank you πŸ™‚ I guess, we both really enjoy stepping out πŸ™‚ so we are quite enthusiastic that way πŸ™‚

    • I too love your optimism…If this had happened to us, my husband would have been livid and I would have brooded and we would come back home…

Thank you Bones – we are enthusiatic when it comes to going out πŸ™‚ We brood when it comes to other things πŸ™‚

  11. a merc – wow!!! I prefer a BMW not that I’m planning to buy one…Here in Singapore we r car-less as cars r prohibitably expensive…A $20,000 car with taxes will cost $60,000…So for me, it’s back to using public transport and cabs…

We are leaning towards a BMW too. I know that about Singapore! It is way too expensive to have car there, isn’t it? But I have heard that the public transport is fantastic! I miss London – for its public transport – it used to be very convenient there.

  12. Smitha pizza is boring,i had pizza at pizza hut yesterday and i love it.Daughters liked gralic bread πŸ™‚

I love it too – but I tease my husband because he always order pizzas and then wishes that he had ordered pasta instead πŸ™‚ At Pizza Hut – we always have only pizzas. Poohi loves garlic bread too πŸ™‚

Wow Merc,i love it but i love camary than any other car,we are planning to buy one and i am just waiting for the day i drive.I got my licence 3 years but didnt drive as varunavi didnt allow me to drive and then pinky.Let me see now if they allow me now πŸ™‚

Am sure they will allow you to drive. I have not got my license yet – just waiting to complete my classes. Camry is a nice car! We are probably not going in for the Merc- BMW more likely.

Here most of road the speed limit is 100,u have to drive or else u will pushed to the slow lines
Really? 100 is on the higher side here.

Even we took kids to zoo here and with the temp of 45 degrees all the animals were in the A/C rooms and were sleeping at 11.00 in the morning.Felt so bad for those animals.
Oh oh! It is the reverse here – am sure most animals feel too cold πŸ™‚ Animals in A/C rooms! Wow! I feel bad for animals in zoos – especially those zoos where the animals look sad and dejected.

  13. what a day.. you got a looooong drive when it was cold and that too at top speed.. πŸ™‚

oh i would have loved it.. though i feel sorry for poohi.. sad she just got to see crystal animals..

    22 degrees is warm..? πŸ˜€

    Merc.. great choice..

  14. Super-duper account of the drive Smitha … thoroughly njoyed.

Me wants to go on a drive nw .. now I hv the plan for the weekend πŸ™‚

Yes – driving around is fun, isn’t it:) So you have your weekend all chalked out πŸ™‚

    Yummy Pasta … Wowwwww!!!!!

So, u got to eat n shop! Yay!

Yeah – the 2 most important things – eat and shop πŸ™‚

Poohi missed the animals. How sad 😦

Yes, unfortunately – we plan to go there again – the next time it is sunny πŸ™‚

  15. 100 miles per day & Test Drive….

do these go hand in hand…

    I cant believe this… I m in total shock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you told me yesterday I thought test drive meant going to the fountain circle and back… !!!!!!!!!

We had it for they whole weekend and drove a total of 240 miles πŸ™‚
Infact I was muttering to myself… what fuss you are making of the test drive and not replying to my most precious comments.. !!!!!!!!!!!!

    OMG !!!!!!!!!!!

now I m so green even my colleagues are asking me what happened… 100 miles test drive in a MERC !!!

this is just lies to make us jealous… nothing else… πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

yeah – these are all figments of my imagination πŸ™‚

    • Dhiren, bro, the first time I took my car on the highway, I hit 230 km/hr to test the stability of the car on high speeds & highways. Its common in countries that have really good roads and no cows, cycles, people, dogs, pot holes on them. OK, maybe 230 kph is not too common but 160-180 kph (100-110 mph) is pretty routine stuff… πŸ˜‰

      • bhai… the most expensive vehicle i bought today was a Yamaha Enticer… that too without any trial… so obviously I wouldnt have a clue…

Arre – we had no idea either – this is just part of the company lease scheme. The last time we test drove – it was just around the block πŸ™‚ But then that was a used car… πŸ™‚

  16. that was a lovely account of the day…so you didnt get to practice in your soon-to-bought Merc?? πŸ˜€

Where are the pics of the day trip???

No – I wanted to try – I am not legally allowed to until I get my license – I need somebody who has been driving in the UK for atleast the last 3 years with me – and husband has just completed 2 😦

Pics are still not downloaded – been busy and lazy to download them πŸ™‚ We have not decided which car to go in for. We still have to test drive the Audi and the BMW. Will decide after that.

  17. I so greatly love fast drives as much as i enjoy slow drives thru scenic places.. the temp, the drizzle and test drive for the wkend – everything sounds perfect to me..

Welcome here, Tara πŸ™‚ Yes it was a fun weekend – despite the weather πŸ™‚ We did do a awful lot of driving πŸ™‚

    • call it awesome please…. how can drives be aweful? u are not even in India where the potholes in rains or the stink could be a reason… isnt it?

No no – The drive was awesome – I just meant that we did a lot of driving in 2 days – 240 miles in all πŸ™‚

n the post in incomplete without a picture.. more than the car dashboard, i am interested in seeing the green shot u would have taken on the way..

I will post them πŸ™‚ Have not downloaded them yet – been busy and lazy πŸ™‚

  18. do you have any idea that you made your husband a driver out of this post ???? πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ (dont hate me, please…. πŸ™‚ )

Well, he is that, isn’t he πŸ™‚ He loves driving so much – that he won’t even mind being called that πŸ™‚

  19. Still laughing at your ‘chanting slow down, slow down’!

Doing a ‘test’ drive in a new mercedes must have been great fun! Forget about the other inconveniences! I thought it is very hot there, this year.
It is certainly not hot here 😦 London , it is apparently! My luck – just when we shift out of there πŸ™‚

Anyway, you had a nice pasta and your husband, his favourite pizza. Good. Did you drive for sometime at least?! Speeding during long drives, is an addiction for most men!
I did not – because, I am not allowed to -legally as I don’t have my license yet 😦 Yes, this speed thing is an addiction for most men πŸ™‚

One small incident, but written interestingly, Smitha.
    Thank you Sandhya πŸ™‚

  20. Smi!you are buying a merc next?

We are not buying a merc 😦 Most prob a BMW – yet to decide πŸ™‚ We were just trying it out πŸ™‚

Can I come and stay with you? Will you adopt me? pls? pls?! πŸ˜€

Sure – come right over πŸ™‚

I LOVE Cars and am waiting to buy one soon!! πŸ˜›

Driving all day sounds like my kind of fun! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
Really – come swap places with me πŸ™‚ I like it too – but sometimes – I am just not in the mood for it 😦

  21. Sounds like fun time. i was lol when you said your hubby ordered pizza and ate your pasta. It happens all the time with me. I am more enthu to eat what my husband has ordered than mine πŸ˜€

Yes, I do that too – but for some reason, in Italian places – it is always the reverse πŸ™‚

  22. The drive in the Merc makes up for everything else! Nothing else matters! [Metallica πŸ™‚ ]
I am a big driving buff like your husband.
(But I dont carry coats everywhere :P)
Cheers and thanks for stopping by

Welcome here, Preeti and thanks so much for dropping by πŸ™‚ So you are a driving buff too πŸ™‚ There seems to be quite a few around πŸ™‚

  23. hehe you enjoyed in end, thats what mattered..feel sorry for our daughter though…Why are you guys so well prepared for a trip :D?

Well, yes we did enjoy. She did too – just that she did not get to see animals which she was really looking forward to πŸ™‚

    Welcome here:)

  24. hahaha… i like the slow down, slow down chant of urs πŸ˜› but u shudnt have been a spoilsport! lol… hmm but with a daughter in the car as well, i dont blame u!

Yeah – I am a terrible side seat driver 😦 Husband is a careful driver – just that I guess, I am more comfortable in lower speeds πŸ™‚

just a li’l more planning and i m sure ur next trip will b a success. not that u did too badly this time tho… shopping for u, driving for ur hubby… just ur daughter who had to console herself with less. next time make her priority πŸ™‚

Yes, next time, we plan to leave really early and go straight to the zoo first πŸ™‚

  25. Pingback: Of driving and cars « Logical Obscurity

  26. All I would say is…

Aur jeene ko kya chahiye!!! πŸ˜€

BTW wasn’t hubby grilled for reading the temprature the wrong way???

Oh he was πŸ™‚ I would never let such an opportunity pass by πŸ˜‰

  27. Where were you off to? Chester Zoo? I have heard that that is the best one in UK. Haven’t been there yet!
And cars move here at insane speeds. Last time we went we were touching 160, km not miles! πŸ˜›

We were off to Flamingo Land. It is a zoo + adventure park – North Yorkshire. It sure looked interesting on the web. We will give it a shot the next time. Chester Zoo was around 80 miles from here – so we gave up the idea – as we were already quite late..

  28. wah! trust you to be a true blue optimist and even enjoy this so thoroughly! πŸ™‚

We did not want to waste the day, since we were out anyways πŸ™‚

the slow down slow down would be me too πŸ™‚

I am paranoid about speed πŸ˜€

Oh you too πŸ™‚ Thank you for giving me company πŸ™‚ I get quite jittery and high speeds and my feet go to the ‘imaginery brakes’ on my side πŸ™‚

like Smita said I hope you wont let him forget the wrong ‘reading’ in a hurry πŸ˜€

No no – no chance of that happening πŸ™‚
