Sweet smell of successful baking

That’s what my house smells like today :) I experimented with bread for the very first time – thanks to Crafty’s suggestion in this post about the most fantastic looking french bread rolls from bakingbuddies ! I’m ecstatic! I’m jumping around in pure joy :) It came out not too bad for a first-timer.. especially given the fact that I , very ambitiously tried to make a braided roll. It is not as beautiful as I would have wanted it to be – but it’s good enough for me :)

Well, here’s my story in pictures :) I would love to be able to capture that smell! Its smelling like a bakery :) Let me enjoy that smell while you take a look at the pics :) I am so excited that I am posting this at 11:30 in the night.. I never do that – I am total morning person – but I can’t wait to show off :)

Cooling on the wire rack

Here it is cooling on the wire rack – both daughter and I are standing next to it jumping in joy :)

Ready to serve

Not very professional looking  - but it sure made my day :)

Sliced and ready to eatSliced and ready to eat :)

It does taste wonderful – even if I say so myself :)

If that was not enough – we also baked cupcakes which was decorated by daughter – hence the pink :) Don’t they look garish? I wanted to do chocolate – but madam likes pink.

  1. The bread looks like grilled turkey!!!! which I definately love :P
not a fan of bread but the smell of freshly baked bread is awesome :P

It looks like grilled turkey? Now you’ve put me off it :( You don’t like bread :( Yes, the smell of freshly baked bread is wonderful, isn’t it?

and cupcakes look good….. :P LOL at “madam likes pink” :P :P
:) Yes, she loves pink – so since she was decorating it – it had to be pink :)

    • yeah, I dont like bread much… it reminds me of fever :P I have bread only when I have fever :P or when there is nothing left in the house to eat :P

You have bread when you have fever? I used to be given idlis :( So I never liked idlis for a long time – now I will kill to have it :)

  2. Welcome to Smitha bakery for the freshest and softest bread you will find anywhere!

Oh thank you thank you :) See -it is for praise like this that I posted this :)

I think you should call all your blog-mitrs when you come to India next and give them a good treat somewhere.

Absolutely – when I get back to India for good – definitely :)

  3. You say that they are not beautiful??? Girl these are awesome!!!! They look as if if made be a professional!!!

The braids kept coming off when I was shaping them – finally somehow managed to keep them together :( Thankfully -it came out looking not too bad :) Give it a try sometime – it tastes yum!

Too good and would have loved to smell the sweet aroma!!!!

You know, its a pity there is no way of capturing smells :(

  4. smitha u r tempting me to try this out, looking great.Hopping to that blog and checking for the recipe.

oh do hop over – they have loads of yummy looking recipes :)

Cup cake looks great and little chef is making :)

I hate coloured icing actually – but since she wanted to do it – I did.. But it was fun :) We did it last night – after dinner :)

  5. WOAH!!!! You will not believe it but while reading your post I could almost smell it. Dont know how that was possible. Coz here I am sitting in a hotel room in Turkey!!! I know it is just the human mind sending wierd signals left right and center! See, even they have gone crazy seeing those pics!!!!

Hotel room in Turkey – Lucky you!!

I am stepping down right now to the lobby for my breakfast. I usually love these breakfast buffets only coz they have LOTS of baked stuff.

Oh I love the breakfast buffets for the very same reason! And then feel heavy the whole day – having pigged out on carbs :)

Thanks for tingling those taste buds! :p

    You’re most welcome :)

  6. *drooling*
    !yummy!! Yummy!yummy!!
Smitha why?why are you doing this?
first the post on cakes where I all but jumped on the next flight coming there…
    now this!
    SOB!!!

Sorry :( Could not help but post it – I was so excited at how it turned out :)

please send me some of that!! :D

the braided one is looking good :) did you give it the glazed look or does it look like that?
    reminded me of honey :)
The glazed look comes from brushing it with butter as soon as it is taken out of the oven.. The recipe in baking buddies is very good – the only thing I did differently was use Bread flour .

  7. Yummy!!!

I second Vinod’s suggestion – please give us a treat when you are here next…

Yes, definitely – when I move back to India for good :) But Bones – you are off to Singapore, aren’t you :(

  8. now i really am drooling… the first pic makes it loook so so so yummy !!!!

    some cheese… and i m gobbling it with it….
Oh yes – it is lovely with cheese! I gobbled it up as it as :)

  9. You made them???? Wow ! Cakes, now bread!! What are you doing to us, you sadist !!! Ok, when are you coming over to India next ??? Expect all of us to barge in !!!

Looks like next time I come to India – I will have to sneak in and sneak out :)

  10. *drool drool drool*

I am salivating here. Please send ur readers a cup cake each, no?

Welcome here Neha :) Wish I could send you all a cupcake each – but you are all welcome here :)

      • Neha !! and when you bake it… dont forget to give me a call and share it with me… i ll bring the cheese… !!

Pehle usko banane to do? You have already invited yourself!!!

  11. I have given by hopes of baking some good stuff :( This is drool worth . Mind sending me step by step recipe pliss ?

Misty – the recipe is here – bakingbuddies.wordpress.com/2009/04/12/basic-french-bread-rolls. I followed it totally apart from using bread flour instead of maida.. The instructions here are very clear.

  12. Damn, those look good. And there’s no smell quite like the smell of freshly baked bread……..

    Cheers,

    Quirky Indian

‘there’s no smell quite like the smell of freshly baked bread……..’ Absolutely!

  13. “you call my pink decoration on the cupcake garish — how dare you ma ?” says your daughter. i just wrote it down for her.

ha ha  She is delighted that somebody is listening to her :)

  14. I read your post only now! I thought egg white is brushed on hot bread rolls, for the glazy look. Applying butter is better. Thank you.

I had read about egg-whites too but was delighted to see that butter does the job pretty well :) Hate all that hassle to use the eggw-whites plus the yolks get wasted :(

  15. arreeee wah!!!!!!!! SMITHUUU

u made it! it’s come so so awesome!!!! wow!!!
Thanks to you!!! You directed me there – Thank you!!!!

does mandy know??? wait! i’ll go tell her!!!
I did leave a comment at hers and there is pingback on her post as well :)

this is superb smitha! really! the glaze looks great! was it butter?
Yes, it is butter and it was quite simple, you know.. Perfect for a first-timer :)
i agree, smell of fresh bread, yummy!!!!

what did u have it with????
I ate it up just like that :) Did not even need butter.. Had it with mushroom soup for dinner :)

cupcake looks pwetty! its a barbie cupcake!!! :D

    *drool*

Cupcake looks pretty?? It looks horrible :( I hate that pink icing – and I cheated – did not use icing sugar as I had ran out of it – and we iced just 4 of them – non iced cakes for the grown-ups :) Barbie – she does not know of Barbie -yet – I hope to keep her away from Barbie as long as possible :)

    • ROFL! keeping poohi away from barbie eh? good choice!

me never liked barbie…not even in my childhood…got gifted a doll from an uncle n gave it away to a cousin!

me liked animal soft toys better! :D

I never liked Barbies either – I did not even like stuffed toys :( Was a proper tomboy :( Somehow Barbies feel too materialistic to me :(

that cupcake DOES NOT look horrible *gasps, closes ears of little cupcakes that might feel bad*

 You are so cute Crafty!

they look pwetty n cute smithu! non-iced for grown ups?
i’ll have the one for non-grownups pliss!!! :D

Sure – the non grown-ups cupcake is marked for you :) Would not dream of giving you the other plain ones :) I could decorate some with chocolate if you prefer :)

  16. You say it doesnt look professional? Hell, it is more than professional. The bread is divine…
am blogrolling you. So that I can have a dekho at this bread when I want to. And also to go back to your old post at leisure.
    Ijazat hai?

Oh Thank you, Thank you :) Ijazat? Honoured to be blogrolled by you :) Loved the way you write :)

  17. Oh wow! Drooling here! I have never baked anything since I just have microwave.. n no oven.. but i want to now!!

I tried baking cakes in the micro – but never turned out right.. Here it is wonderful coz we have a proper oven to experiment in :)

  18. It looks really, really good for a 1st time effort :-D
    I can’t tell you how chuffed I am :)

Curious but I got tht bakery smell too :-o
You did too ? Are you by any chance my invisible neighbour?

  19. Hmmm.. this is too bad Smitha… making me hungry at this very odd time of morning 3.. hmmm.. too bad :P :P

3 in the morning – its perfect for midnight munchies – we used to snack on ice cream at 3 in the morning :)

from the Pics I guess that they are really really yummy :)
The bread was – the cupcakes – I am trying to resist :)

    • Ice cream @ 3… very strange.. never had an ice-cream but had a full meals at that time few days before.. another strange thing :)

Full meals? I have never tried that!

  20. *Drooling*
    I’m hungry now.
The bread and fairy cakes look yummy.
    My mouth is watering. :-)

When you come over – I promise you bread and cupcakes for sure :) You have to promise that you won’t gag on the rest of the food :)

  21. Mama mia! Its breathtaking,Smits! I’m droooooling here. And you say you have domestic horrors?? You create heaven, lady!

Deeps – the only thing I can do without creating domestic disasters is bake – touchwood :)

    Looks delicious…I want some toooooo..pls pls pls :) :)

Come over -you are only 4 hours or so away :)

  22. The bread looks like a chunk of braided hair! :P  Its the shape! But very professional! :)
And even I like chocolate cupcakes. I am eating them all the time.

  23. The bread and muffins look great! Yummm….love the smell of freshly baked bread, dip it in some olive oil + pepper and its just perfect! :)

Oh I just love dipping it in olive oil + pepper – but am really trying to keep the fat low :) The cupcakes were also with low fat margarine – to feel less guilty.

BTW, I baked some whole wheat banana muffins recently from http://joyofbaking.com/ and they turned out superb! Its a very good website, do check it out.

I tried banana muffins quite some time back – healthy low fat ones :) Will try these sometime.

  24. Oh Smitha, I missed this post. The bread and cupcake looks Awesome. I am sure your daughter enjoyed baking with u.It is a lot of fun baking with kids.

Oh yes! We had a lovely time baking and eating :) It is certainly a lot of fun to bake with kids – they have such fun too, don’t they?
